Not enough digits I don't think. A pic would be big help, but how many cylinder engine, that might narrow it down fast.

Where did you find this number? On the engine? Or on the machine itself? Lavoy is right... There aren't enough numbers.

That's a 450 (the battery box is either an early B or a straight 450). And after what Ken has said, I'd be inclined to agree with him that its a straight 450

Its a straight 450, the HLR shifter is floor mounted. Does look nice and straight.

That would have been true if it were a 440 but it is a 450. 1965 was the first year for straight 450s and as KenP said based on your serial number it is likely a 1966.

FYI, the serial number range is more important than the year manufactured when you order parts so no worries about getting the year of manufacture exact.

BTW, thank your son for his service to our country.

Tigerhaze.....
Will always tell my son that someone has thanked him for his service...thanks for noticing

Another question about this dozer...Are parts hard to find this type?

We tried to sell it last spring and were told that parts would be hard to find and take too long to get. It was neighbor farmers who were interested...

They thought the year for this dozer at that time was 1958 to 1960...

I think the people that said parts are hard to find and take too long to get are exaggerating a little bit. Parts for 450s are generally easier to find than for earlier crawlers. Again, they may have been thinking it was a 440.

The availability of parts will depend ultimately on which parts you need- many are still available from John Deere directly as well as aftermarket suppliers. Service items such as filters can be found from a variety of tractor supply sources. Some items such as diesel injection pumps are common to other brands of machines so parts can be had from a variety of diesel suppliers.

Lavoy, the board administrator, is one of the first sources to check with for JD crawler parts- he will steer you in the right direction even if he doesn't carry it.

If Lavoy is not available, a quick way to determine whether a part is readily available is to log onto John Deere's parts website and serach for what you need:

http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_Alt

You will need to do a model search for 450 and then select "922 - 450 Crawler Tractor - 08Nov06". If you put parts that you want to know about in your cart, it will tell you whether they are available and the list price or if they are "no longer available". You will need to be logged in to see prices.

If parts are no longer available from Deere, there is still a chance that Lavoy can find them for you or they can be obtained from a salvage yard or other aftermarket source. There are a lot of 450s out there. Also some parts can be repaired.
