440 i crawler loader manual
Which manual do I want in order to service my new to me loader? I have not seen a service manual listed on ebay, just parts. Is the 440 motor the same as the one on a deer tractor?
Thanks
Steve

Hi,
If it's the gas engine, then it's pretty much the same as on the 420 and 430 series wheel tractors. The diesel was only used in the 440 series and the 435 ag wheel tractor.
I don't know about the 440 service manual. It may be that since the 440 was specific for the industrial market, they put everything into one manual and didn't make one flip through all those older agricultural model manuals.
For the ag line, one has to have a set of service manuals. Each manual covers only the differences between models. They figured only service shops needed manuals, so they made each as thin as possible by not covering something found in an earlier manual.
For example, things that remained the same on the 420 as they were on the 40 are found in the 40 manual, not the 420 one.
Also, things that remained the same on the 420 as they were on the M are found in the M manual, not the 40 or the 420 ones.
I also need the 430 manual as my 420c is a Phase-III with differential-style reverser, and that is not covered in the 420 manual but in the 430 one!
So, for my 420 I have to have five manuals, four shop (M, 40, 420 and 430) and one parts. Fortunately, the parts manual is the latest edition, so it covers the entire line from the M thru the 440 and all I have to do is figure out which variant of a particular part I need.
Now, what I do not know is if the 440 manual follows this pattern or not. I've always used the manuals I have to work on a 440. Heck, once you're used to these things, the 440 isn't really any different so I never needed a 440 specific manual.
Hopefully, the 440 is all in one manual and you won't need the set.
later!
Stan

440 manual
Fortunately I have the 420 manual as i have a 420 tractor. The carberator is a little different and I really haven't looked at much else. I'll have to find the service manual Lavoy mentions as I know nothing about this thing.
Lavoy, any word on Track guides?
Thanks
Steve
PS I really appreciate this site!

Lavoy,
Just to educate me, is the 440 manual self-contained or does one need the stack of older manuals like one does with the ag machines?
Also, if it's self-contained, is the number you posted just for crawlers, or are the various wheel 440s in there as well?

The main manuals for 440IC(D) are
SM-2023 John Deere 440 series spark ignition tractors
SM-2028 General Motors 2-53 series diesel engine for John Deere tractors
PC-573 Tractor - "440IC" Industrial Crawler
PC-609 Tractor- "440ICD" Industrial Crawler Diesel
The 440I tractors have separate parts lists and I have a 831 loader parts list somewhere, I will find it and get that number also.
In the SM-2023 it has about 36 pages on the engine so it MAY be stand alone. They mention two engines, Were there ever any "tractor fuel" engines put in a crawler?
