420c reverser
having problems with the reverser. seems everyone i talk to that has or had a 420c has had problems shifting the reverser? mine was just very sloppy to start with and just got progressivly worse to the point where i just quit trying to use it. i split the transmission this spring and could find no problem or even any wear in it except for every linkage point. i remade pins to fit tight and took all the slop out of the shifting handle assembly. it worked great, but only for a short time and just got worse each time i used it. now i cannot shift it at all and it seems like it is stuck in 2 gears at the same time. it is in the reverser as i can push/pull the crawler with no problem and free wheels easily. i do and always have used the clutch and brake before shifting reverser. what did i mess up? whats the solution to a trouble free reverser? i will start on disassembly tomorrow, i`m hoping it is just one of the pins that is on linkage thats giving me fits. the reverser lever moves front to back, but feels like it could be something inside slipping on the shaft itself?

420c reverser
Gear type
It is possible that the detent ball broke and is jamming the shift rod. It could also be bearings trouble. Either way, tear it down and check it out to be safe. I have/have had at least a half dozen 420's with reversers that we used at various times on the farm, and never had any trouble with them. I have however taken them apart if I was into the crawler for something else, just to be safe, and have found an occasional bad thrust bearing that would have eventually caused a problem.

420c direction reverser
Lavoy,
i did get the reverser tore down last week, first chance i`ve had to reply.
the thrust bearing towards the front of the unit are shot, guess the grinding were enough to jam up the splines on shifter coupling. the detent ball fell out while taking it apart, but have not knocked out the plug and spring. i would like to rebuild this unit, all bearings, seals and thrust washers. might as well replace the detent ball, spring and plug too. gears, shifter fork and rail looks just fine, idler gear thrust plate too looks like no wear. would you have access to these parts? if you do, i would like to buy them thru you. i will check with the local john deere dealer, but their prices are out of this world! if you can get these and let me know the price i will pay up in advance.
thank you for your help, Tim

Tim,
I can get all of the parts, may not be able to save you any money. The farthest forward thrust bearing is obsolete, and for some reason, most dealers are incapable of figuring out the sub number. If yours can't figure it out, I have the number.
Also, make sure and check out the thrust washer that goes up inside of the prop shaft, it often gets damaged and unless you look closely or take it out, you don't see it.

lavoy,
thanks for the info. if you can get all the parts i need, i will go with you. it will save me time of trying to explain that thrust bearing over the phone. the closest dealer is more than just an hours drive. i don`t have a parts book, just the service manual and for some reason i can`t get through to them by email. if you can come up with a price and the best way to get a credit card number to you, i would be happy to do so. both my brother and my dad are needing to use this thing and we split up the cost. i do prefer email as i am a shift worker and am currently working the night shift. shipping to northern mn. 56669 if you cant figure shipping in its ok
Thank you, Tim

Tim,
You are not far from me, and the parts are not heavy.
What all do you want as far as parts? If you have it apart, I would recommend all the bearings and seals. If the thrust plate has been grooved out by the forward bearing, it will need to be replaced. Check the pilot bearing in the end of the prop shaft, sometimes they will be bad, and are a real problem to come up with.
I have detent ball, spring, and mounting gasket on hand, that is about it. Get back to me with the parts you need, you can PM me, or e-mail. Should only be about 3 days for me to get the parts if ordered early in the week, more if just before a weekend, but I can expedite freight but that costs more sometimes than it should.
Let me know,
Lavoy

Lavoy,
yes i do want to replace all the bearings and seals, might as well do that pilot bearing and detent ball spring and plug. the thrust plate looks excellent, no wear at all, might as well get the main gasket too. if you have all the thrust washers for it, might as well put new ones in too. let me know best way to get a credit card number to you and will send address at that time also. no need to expedite shipping, i`ve tried that before and sure didnt see any difference from regular ground service.
thanks, Tim
