440ICD jigsaw Project

Post by jimmydiesel » Wed Jan 01, 2025 10:20 pm

I brought this 440ICD home in 2023. The engine was out and apart but I wanted a dozer with a #64-6 way blade so I think it is worth saving.
Rebuilt and installed the 2-53 in 2024. Finally on New Year’s Day the 440 made its way inside into the shop. One of the track tensioners is blown out so started taking that apart today. Much more work to do.

This dozer is equipped with the very rare optional high strength master pin retainer.

It rained and snowed here all day, was nice to be inside. Made a little progress. Looks like the tensioner just needs new seals.

Looks like a good project!! Keep the photos coming. Nice retainer, i hope you don't damage it or you might not be able to reuse it.

I have a 420 that's been very patient. Waiting about 5 years...

Thanks Gus.
I will keep posting pictures. I wish more of the members would post pictures of their repairs and projects.
This message board is a little more difficult to post on then most.

I'm a newbie here, 1010 owner for < 1 week.
But I'll do my best to post pics.
I tried in my thread, using 'postimages' website. Only took 2 minutes to set up. They show in my post as a large thumbnail, then you can click for a full-size view. That seems to work well. Like this:

Good looking 1010. Is that a 4 way or 6 way blade? I did see your other post. This is a great place for John Deere crawler owners.

Just manual 90" blade, unfortunately. I really would have liked a 6-way, but can't have everything I guess!
I've got some plans for clearing some trails in the back woods, but longer term, I'm really thinking about a full-on restoration. I've read so many articles about how there's not much love for the 1010, but these things are cute in a way that newer crawlers are not.

A little more progress.
When I brought this home the engine was out and apart. Lots of boxes and cans of parts and bolts. It’s been a lot like doing a large jigsaw puzzle. I thought the starter most likely needed rebuilt so I pulled it off and started to take it apart. It looked like new on the inside with a new drive so I put it back together and hooked it to a battary and it works great. The red arrow is pointing to the missing clutch release arm. This is a 1960 440 ser. # 460815 so it has the later type of clutch linkage. The release arm and lever were missing when I got it. Still looking for them.

The original fuel filter ( on the left ) doesn’t interchange with any other filter that I could find but this Napa filter is the same height and is 10 microns so I will use it. The gasket that comes with the filter is not the right size but I had a new one the right size from another job.

The red arrows point to where both of these radiator brackets have been broken and welded back together. The one on the right had a piece of 1/2” rod stock brazed to it. They are both right side brackets from 2 different machines. The one on the left was welded with stainless rod.

Got the track tensioner resealed and back on. The special master pin retainer was damaged and will have to be replaced.
Drained the final drives, just looked like old dirty gear oil. Drained the transmission got a cup of water and orange oil, so that may be a problem. Drained the reverser it had very black oil looked like old engine oil. There was a few metal chunks also.
Will flush them out and refill. Won’t know how good or bad they are until the engine is running
Cold weather is slowing progress.

This 440 has the throttle in the center of the dash. It didn’t seem to have much resistance so I pulled the control off to replace the friction disk’s. The original cork disk’s were gone but it did have what looked like a piece of exhaust manifold gasket in it.
Image

I cut out 2 disks from some cork gasket material I had. 2” OD 7/8’s ID. Time will tell how well it works.

Back together

The seat mounting bracket bolts to the top of the transmission it had a broken bolt and I broke another one. Left had bit and an easy out didn’t work, was able to drill to size-27/64 and retap.

Progress has been slow but steady

The bracket that goes on the back of the engine and mounts the fuel tank, fuel filter and one end of the throttle linkage must have broken at on time. A previous owner made up a new bracket from 1/2” plate. The support for the throttle linkage had one of the mounting bosses broken off. I made a mount and welded it to the support but needed to drill a hole for the bolt. Drilling it by hand wasn’t working very good. So I had to bring out the portable drill press.

The belts for the fan, water pump and alternator are on. Cleaned the fuel tank and got it installed. Replaced all the fuel and oil filter hoses. Used the crank pulley and fan from another engine as the ones from this one had been bent and poorly repaired.

Image

When I drained the oil from the transmission i got a cup of water and the oil was rust orange. Pulled the shift cover to have a look. I sprayed it down with diesel and looks much better than expected. I will put a new boot on the shift lever to help keep water out.

HI,

Looking good!

But, your signage is wrong. That's most decidedly *not* a Studebaker! :P

And I don't think the NGK spark plugs are gonna be of much use, either.
