JD450c steering issue (track brake?)

Post by rcmindustrial » Tue Sep 10, 2024 12:15 pm

JD450c with wet clutches etc. When I go to turn right, it wont seem to lock up so I am assuming it is the brake on that track. If it is the brake, what linkages should i look at? I cleaned and greased moving parts under the seat but there still is some other things to consider: When pulling the left lever back the right lever will move back an inch or so as well. Before greasing, i would press the brake and it would also move the right lever back a tad (doesnt do that after lubricating). Right lever when pulled back makes the machine turn wide (sometimes it will lock up and pivot but not nearly as good as the left track), also the right lever wont go back as far as the left lever. I can feel the left lever engage the brake it seems. Newer steering clutches from a reputable shop a year ago, just need some insight on linkages to look at, possible adjustment, and any problems that correlate with these symptoms. Clutches seem to be disengaging fine. Both levers pulled back stops the machine if that helps.

Thanks

Welcome to the Boards.

The levers should be independent of each other if one is moving when you pull the other, it sounds like something is still dragging in the linkage. There are no internal adjustments for the steering clutch themselves.

Do you have the 450C Technical Manual TM1102? Have you done a complete adjustment of the steering system by the manual? The 450C wet brakes are self-adjusting it is possible they can overtighten which leads to not working properly. As part of the steering adjustment, they may need to be backed off a fair bit, then brought up to proper adjustment. I think someone here had to do that recently on their machine.
