Hello Folks,
I am new here and would like to say thanks for having me. I have a 1959 440 ic. It seems to run hot on hot days when she's pushing medium weight around (logs,brush..). She runs at 190 F now on the cold days of winter now. After it has set a few days, I do smell a bit of anti-freeze when I start up coming from the exhaust pipe. I am thinking head gasket. Am I on the right track or is it worse than I think?
Thanks,
Sam

It never hurts to check head gasket, do you have any bubbles coming in the radiator? Have you replaced the thermostat? Radiator clean both inside and outside?

440 ic hot
Thanks for the reply Lavoy. Shortly after I purchased the 440 ic, It was over heating. I found the water pump was leaking and was shot. I cleaned and flushed the radiator while I replaced the water pump and thermostat. I thought this would have solved the problem, but it still ran hot (not as hot, but still hotter then norm.)
It has boiled over when it overheated, but I think you telling me to look for bubbles when it is running before it gets hot, and I will.
Thank you,
Sam

Yeah, then that is odd. Although radiator could still be bad. What I do on my own stuff, or anything I restore, I put in the updated 6 blade fan, you can't believe how much more air they move.

440 ic running hot
Hey Lavoy,
Turns out my radiator core was bad. Had it recored and I put a 6 blade fan on it while I was at it. We had some warm weather up here, so I tested it out. Ran at right about 190 under load all day. Thanks for the advice.
