Do you need to use the clutch to shift the shuttle shift lever from reverse to forward. On a 1967 jd 350
sorry if this is a dumb question
Thanks

Hi,
The 350 with reverser has no actual clutch. The pedal opens a hyd valve in the reverser which stops the drive. Which is what the lever does when moved to N.
But, if you also have older machines with mechanical reversers, they do require the use of the clutch.
And, 350s without reversers do have a clutch which must be used before moving the trans lever.

Hi,
The 1-2-3-4-R shifter is the gear transmission. The dash mounted F-N-R is the direction reverser.

Mechanical Reversers
I have never seen a reverser that required the use of the clutch?
We have a couple 350 gas powered crawlers without Reversers and thought they were rare.

Hi,
The 350 I had was without a reverser. Diesel and outside mount manual blade, so pretty basic. The trans always went from second to reverse cleanly, and since I tend to work in second most of the time, I never missed the reverser. They were not all that rare back when, but most have probably not survived until now. I do wish I had never parted ways with it, actually.
The machines older than the 350,.like my 420, have reversers which require the use of the clutch or one destroys it in short order. There are lots of differences like this which is why we split the forums up in to early and late models. But, sometimes folks read things like 'must use clutch with reverser' in the early forum and miss that this changed in the later machines.

350 reverser
Sorry I thought there might of been a 350 with a manual reverser.
We got one of our gas 350's with no reverser for 500 and bought because the previous owner ripped it down for a rebuild. Was like buying a model kit.
We spent some time this weekend and ran my 430 and 440 which both have reversers. Very nice feature on these older crawlers. Also our manual shift 450, which now has a stuck steering clutch from sitting.

Hi,
IIRC, the 350 reverser was hydraulic from the start. Which makes sense, as the reverser design was evolving from the beginning on the 420 to the 440 and the 1010.
