John Deere 350B with backhoe

I really enjoy this site and appreciate everyone taking the time to share their knowledge. I have been reading on here for some time and have got the "cheap crawler fever". Looking at John Deere 350B with 4 in 1 bucket with backhoe..1970 model. Has been sitting for 10 plus years out in the weather..Any bits of wisdom that can be shared would be greatly appreciated..The owner is asking $2,500.

Worth nearly that much at scrap yard. If the engine is not stuck and holds water and oil (separately) it is worth it. Of course, that assumes your labor will be free.

Even if it needed some work and had to pay someone, your still way ahead of the game! That's a good price...

You are likely looking at a lot of work ahead of you, but at that price, with that undercarriage, you really can't lose.

I wish I had that machine. I am in NC near Raleigh. I have A 350B and am doing a partial rebuild on the undercarriage due to problems found while putting steering clutches in. Figured might as well do it now while its apart. If you need some help, Private message me. Machine looks rough but the undercarriage is excellent. If you dont buy it let me know.

If it runs and moves (dont care if it turns) it should already be in your yard ......the undercarriage alone is worth the 2500 ........ the rest is free :o :o

How mechanically inclined are you? Was the exhaust pipe covered? The engine and the steering clutches may be stuck. Both can be repaired, but will take time and money. As others have said, the base machine is worth the asking price if you want a project. Here's to a potentially satisfying revival.

I consider myself mechanically inclined although I am new to crawlers with my experience to this point being tractor related (1959 Fordson Dexta and 1956 John Deere 430 gas). Good point about checking the exhaust pipe as I neglected to check that and I already assumed that the steering clutches would be a problem based on prior posts that I have read..I am fortunate that I am currently working on site where the crawler is located and can continue to keep an eye on it before making the leap. Thanks again everyone for the great input and I'll post more updates as I mull taking the plunge on the "cheap crawler". I certainly have the fever. I have a hard time focusing on work and keep wanting to go over and lift the hood and get busy.

I'm sure that there are people on this board that will have had experience bringing a diesel 350 engine back to life successfully who would be willing to share some things to look out for. The injection pumps (fairly expensive)have close tolerances and one that's full of old fuel and possibly water may have to be handled carefully. I'm outside my element now (dead diesels) so can't help much. I noticed that the air cleaner is missing too which means that some dirt or critters may have gotten into places that are meant to be clean. Good luck. Paul

Take the head off and inspect, clean and then see if you can turn it over a little at a time to allow you to clean, scrape or sand the ridges and rust or whatever you find, off the cylinder walls. The pistons could pop out a sleeve on the way up, so be sure to use a bar or... something bolted down with a couple of head bolts to keep them in place ! I started one after the same long time and the cylinders were full of seeds that mice put there... including a muffler full. As well, the 350b has a hydraulic pump disconnect. Might be a good Idea to use this for the initial start up if it is not seized from lack of use. It is the small lever ,bottom right at the front/ side of the engine just forward of the dip stick. (This disconnect is used to change a fan belt without removing the pump to get around the main pulley). As well, the hydraulic lines for the hoe must be hooked up to the hoe or to each other as the fluid in the system runs continuously when the pump is engaged and engine running.
