Best lubes for JD 440 ICD

What are the best lubes for the following:

1. GM 2-53 Diesel
2. Reverser
3. Tranny
4. Final drives
5. Grease for bottom rollers, top roller, etc.

Thanks, I have manuals coming, but I want to service it now.

For the 2-53, Delvac 1640 is what the Detroit shop I spoke with recommends. The guy at the hyd shop I deal with crossed Delvac 1640 with Delo 400. I've been using the Delo so far. Hope this helps.

I really appreciate your reply. I posted these questions twice and you are the only one that has replied so far.
I have had good luck with running Shell Rotella in everything from a Powerstroke to a 730D. Would I be taking a risk using Rotella in this Detroit?

Can you guide me with the other lubes for reverser, tranny, finals, and roller grease?

I would not run the Rotella T in a 2 stroke Detroit, they do not like high detergent oils, and from what I know, it can cause damage eventually.
Reverser is John Deere Hy-Gard or equivalent.
Transmission and final drives are GL5, weight is kind of up to you.
Rollers are supposed to be track and roller grease. It is obsolete from Deere, but Corn Head Grease is the equivalent nowadays. There are jobbers that still make track and roller grease, but might only be in pails, not cartridges.

Many thanks, you just saved me from a potential mistake. Out of habit, I buy Rotella in bulk. Based on your comments, it will not go in my 2-53.

What oil do you think is right for the 2-53?

Thanks for the other lube info also. Manuals are due any day but I want to service this thing before I run it much.

I would go with what Scott found out, or if you have a Detroit shop near you, stop in, they may have what you want on hand in a different brand.
In the old days, we ran a 200 series Mobil, but I doubt that anyone will recognize that number any more. A local gravel hauler ran a high detergent oil in a 6V-92T, and it ended up costing him a really spendy rebuild. If I remember correctly, it has something to do with varnish on the rings or liner, and then it scores.

I run Delo 400 in a Mercedes diesel (small Freightliner). About 60K miles and no ill effects. I don't think the Merc is much different than the similar sized Detroits.

I have bought a case of Delo 400 straight 40W to put in my 440ICD just haven't gotten it changed yet. It was the only 40W oil I could find. I have also heard the automotive oils have reduced their additive package for environmental reasons, and nearly all "modern" cars use roller cams. I plan on running something like Delo 400 in my old tractors, maybe multigrade.

I have Rotella in my 2-53 but am now concerned based on this discussion. I did look on the back of the Rotella container and it states that it is approved for use in Detroit 53 series diesel.

You would think that if it says approved for 53 series, then it should be fine.
