Thanks Ande. Since this is a slow moving piece, I think it might work. I wouldn't try this fix on an axle or other high speed shaft.

The "seal" in only a piece of paper like substance, it won't know a smooth shaft from a rough one.

Since the new JD part is not longer that paper gasket but is an "O" ring, I decided to use JB Weld to at least give the seal surface a fighting chance.

I cleaned the surface as best I could and used tape to line off the area for the seal.

I do agree with Lavoy that since I'm going to put a zerk in the filler tube and pump it full of grease its probably not really important, it just made me feel better!

I will say that JD is still as proud of their stuff as always, the guy at the JD house said that his boss was told to expect a boost in their prices... Yeah!

I used Lucas Hub Oil in my leaky Toyota truck's 4wd hubs with success. It works better than 90 wt with worn seals. How does the price compare to the amount of grease you'll need to fill your piece?

Paul's idea is a good one.The limited range of motion and intermittent
use makes JB weld or other epoxy a great option.If you clean the pitted
areas well to assure good adhesion and use grease instead of an oil the
repair should outlive the machine.Luck,JimAnderson

A speedi sleeve would be another good option since you can access both ends. Replaces the sealing surface with a piece of new metal driven over the end.
