I Should get him a laptop and internet for Christmas :
550G will not move
550G will not move
Ok, guys don't beat me up too bad. I am the middle man here, My dad has a 550G and the steering clutch us out of adjustment (according to him) he is out in the woods and the dozer is locked up. It will start but when shifted into gear,( dosen't matter forward or reverse) it will not move. He just changed the filter, which one I don't know. You all have any ideals what the problem coud be. After a few answers, maybe tomorrow night, I could get him on the phone and we could answer some of your questions to help better understand when, where and what started this problem.

Well there are several questions that come to mind#1is it a power shift or a torque converted unit? #2 Is it locking up or just not engaging you make it sound like he had trany issues so he Then changed the filter? #3is it the steering or the drive locking up or just not re engaging ?#4What were the lead up symptoms to this? #5how many hours are on this dozer? #6 is there a transmission pressure guage on it ?.I know only one man can answer these questions but do what you can. Those G series were the best thing Ma Deere built yet so they are fairly bullet proof old beasts .My Hs and Js never were and are not as good a machine I had 6 ,550Gs a450Gand 2,650Gs that never were seen nor touched by the dealership after I got a hold of them they are a great dozer .Digitup. P.S.get him a lap top and get him on here!
Question #1 Power shift
#2 Not engaging, if you pulled back on the cluth on the left side (slight Pressure) it would engage but will not do nothing now.
#3 Not re-engauging
#4 not engauging would work as long as you keep pressure on it
#5 1500-2000 hrs since transmission was rebuilt
#6 Just a buzzer light.
I just called him, he said hw tought it might be a valve problem.
Would re-building the valve body change anything?

You can order manuals directly from Deere in a variety of formats here- suggest that you get at least the service manual:

You can find the parts diagrams online here (search for 550G):

(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment
You could have a broken left hand steering valve .The spool could be broken inside the valve unit ,This is where you don't diss assemble unless you are in a clean environment but like one other on here the symptoms are much the same.I have had several steering and shifting spools break just not on G series dozers. When they break the go closer to the bottom of the barrel,If it is in good shape put new o rings on it if it broke then replace the valve unit I know that sounds expensive but it is for the best .Digitup.
Its not in the bush really, we were building a pond. It's in a clearing just need to pull it out of the water, about 30 yards. Between the 350 pushing and the backhoe pulling with the back bucket, we might be able to move it. Just need to get it out of the water/mud..... mud is only about 4 inches deep and solid ground.
