450B loader steering brake issues

Post by Stevo » Sat Dec 17, 2011 2:00 pm

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this problem.
I bought an old 450B that was used for training at a tech college. The left undercarriage was all replaced and the steering clutch looked fine. I rebuilt the right side undercarriage complete ( it was done) and rebuilt the right steering clutch complete.
I seem to have nothing but trouble with the steering brakes though. When I first start out the right steering brake has to be used for a while before it grabs and works, the left is okay right away. Although I've adjusted the linkage several times and it always seems to be dead on, the operation of the steering brakes seems to always be changing after being used for a while and will actually quit applying. Yesterday the left side engaged on it's own and locked up. The adjustment hadn't changed.....the brake band just seemed to engage and wouldn't disengage trying to go forward or back. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Stevo

Thanks for the reply Ken, I realized after I posted that I had posted in the wrong place.
I do have the manuals both service and parts and have gone through the adjustment sequence several times. Being a lazy person in general I never cut corners when rebuilding something ( since doing things twice goes against my nature) so I even replaced the linkage shaft bushings. I'm going to see what I can figure out today. Will post what I find.

I tried moving my crawler ahead today and the screeching coming from the left brand indicated that things were still tight. I managed to loosen up the steering brake band a turn and away I went. Not sure why it was tight since it worked fine for an hour and the adjustment nut position hadn't changed, ( I had marked it to see if it waas moving.) I don't anticipate anymore problems until it's - 20 degrees. LOL

Is your foot brake stuck down or locked? Step on the foot pedal and make sure it is travelling freely back and forth. Had this happen to me a few times.

Thanks Jason,
I had to deal with that issue previously so that got checked first.
I think it's Gremlins. Lol
