I need some lights on my 440ICD

Post by mark914 » Wed Dec 14, 2011 10:20 pm

My 1960 440ICD doesn't have any lights on it and I would like to add a front and rear work light. The front grille has three round openings, were lights an option on these ? Any ideas what the generator will handle for amperage ?
It has a 12 volt system.

Thanks
Mark

To my knowledge and according to my parts book, the 440ICD had 2 in the front and an optional rear light.
I could be wrong though.

I do not have my JD 440 ICD Owner's Manual handy but I believe that lights were standard on them. It is common for some or all of the lights to be missing.
Even if they were an option, the front lights bolt to a piece of round stock that is held in a hole by an Allen screw. The rear one requires a specially bent piece of round stock that is threaded on the bottom and bolts through a hole in the left fender. It is available, check with Lavoy.
Not sure what wattage bulbs you are thinking of using, and do not know what the original genny would be able to handle.
Your grill sounds like the later one, as the first ones were a piece of grate.
Never figured out what the middle hole was for, maybe it was to add another headlight?

Yes, that is where the headlight go. I would guess around 20 amps for the generator. If you are not concerned about originality, I would get some universal 12 volt halogen work lights at a Farm and Fleet type store. If you really want to go high tech, I can get you an HID floodlight to put in there.

Thanks for the help !
Mine still has the round rod behind the grille so perhaps someone removed the original lights many moons ago.
Not concerned about having original lights, Think I will go with the universal tractor lamps one on the front and one on the rear.
I'll get the two on and check my charging voltage and make sure it is keeping up ok.

i had assumed the third hole was for another light as in better visibility with the loader model.

If anyone is interested I have a couple of original lights I would part with if the price was right. Nice shape, 12volt. Tom.

That center hole was for access to light the oil wicks in the early models.
