New to me 440ICD

Post by mark914 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 10:29 pm

Hello, Just purchased my first crawler. It is a 1961 44ICD with a 891 loader on the front. Everything is in working order, just need to spend some time giving it some fresh fluids.

I will have to get used to having a little less power than my work dozer

Looks good Mark.
Gives me ambition to get mine finished. I'm working slowly on it.
I'm sure the question about this being a 1961 will come up soon, from what I understand the 440 ran from 58-60.
There should be a tag with the serial number on the lower part of the dash, around the engine shut off.
The wiser ones can correct me if I'm wrong

Great find, I know you are proud to own that piece of history.
It would be a 1960 since that is the last model year for the 440.
When running properly, the GM 2-53 in the 440 puts out 35 HP at 100 ft lbs of torque. No, that does not compare to a 450, but it has surprising capabilities when operated as it should.
The 2-53 is not expensive to totally rebuild if you do most of the work yourself. If it is a keeper, I would go through the engine to get it back to top power. Only use 35MM injectors as a dramatic increase in power will challenge the life of the rest of the drivetrain.
Have fun, that 450 will NEVER sound so good working in the dirt like a "Screamin Jimmy".

1952 JD M W
1955 FORD 640 (burns the most fuel)

Thanks for the information on the year. I was just going off the information the previous owner had written on the manuals. Now I just have to figure out the correct fluids for everything.

The 450J may be around 50 years from now, I don't put a ton of hours on it. It mainly is used putting in fire line. It smells like smoke - just not exhaust smoke.
