JD 450E Right track not pulling

Post by dogbrdr » Tue Aug 17, 2010 9:47 pm

Was all working fine and right track just won't pull now. Left track works fine. Is there an adjustment I can make without tearing into it? Its a 1986 JD450E Long Track dozer.

I had a guy look at it today and he said it sounded like a gear loose or broken or there may be a shear pin in there that sheared off. Does anyone know about this? Thank you

Get a PM -parts manual and TM- tech manual for this dozer and set clutches properly . There is no shear pin in the transmission or drive train on that dozer NONE!.The guys on here can get manuals on c d from Deere look into that as the 450 E series is a new enough machine that it should be set up properly . The manuals are well worth the money you spend on them and you can sell them when you sell the unit .I bought a 790 DLC several weeks ago and gave 200 bucks extra for TM and PM for it well worth the money when I didn't have to run after them .Digitup

Try this company. They show the part, just have to call to see if it's available. http://www.wcsalesinc.com/john_deere.htm

They didn't make the 450Es too long but used parts should be available. The E had a better blade angle than the previous D and the steering was updated as well .The problem with the 450E was Deere installed too small a turbo at first and several other small quirks were thrashed out early and quickly by ma Deere at that point the G series were well beyond the drawing board stage and Deere was keen on component built dozers even before the 450E's came out It would just be two or three years till Deere changed the assembly line over .The Ontario dealer took several prospective buyers of the G series dozers down to the testing grounds and I happened to be one of them when one of the top Deere men asked what I thought of the three direct drive dozers in front of us I told him point blank If you want to make it faster and smoother put a torque converter in it.I could tell he thought I was a bit out spoken at that point and time. The 450Es and 550Bs were still coming off the assembly line.I was trying to figure out when that was as it was a while ago Digitup.

I got the new (used) shaft today. The one that came out has a bushing. The one I bought looks like it had a bearing in the small end of the shaft. Can we just put a new bearing in it and use it or do we have to get another shaft that has the bushing? We were also considering a machine shop to make a bushing to go in the bearing hole.

Got the dozer back and everything was great. After running the dozer for a while now it don't want to pull itself. Sometimes it will work great for 10 or 15 minutes then it like I put on the brakes and won't move. Any ideas???

I tried it again today an I could go slow in forward gear and could go in reverse some but not as good backwards a forwards. I would like to change the filter but I don't know where to get oneor where it is locate on the machine. I woul like to get a service manual too but can't find one yet. Is an operator manual any good and what exactly tell you?

I just looked up the 450E on JDParts:

http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_Alt

The transmission filters look the same as my 450-straight.

Here is some info about changing fluid, cleaning the screen, and changing the filter:

I wouldn't be too surprised if that screen is full of "snot" and that ends up being the cause of your trouble.

Thanks a bunch. I ordered a gasket and I can get the spin on filter at the auto parts store. Is it best to clean the cartridge screen or should I just look for a new one? I hope it just has a cold and is full of snot...

I cleaned he screen. It was really dirty and the fluid was pretty black. For a while the forward and reverse just banged right along like a new one then all of a sudden now just the high works most of the time. Low works some of the time and reverse sometimes when cold. It also seems like it wants to go forward even when in reverse. What could it be now??? My head is spinning!!!
