440icd engine

Post by 440icd » Thu Feb 16, 2006 8:57 am

Iam looking at a 2-53 Detroit for a spare engine,
It’s the same rotation as the one that is in there

I was wondering since they are a Detroit motor, but put into a Deere.
What did Deere change on these, block is the same, but is the head?

Also
Will a 2-71 bolt into my 440icd? Same bell housing bolt pattern for the tranni?
Is the 2-71taller, and wider then the 2-53 ?

Thanks
Scott

I dunno if they will cross / swap or not.

I don't think I'd try to put the 2-71 in though. I think Lavoy pointed out once that if it ever bogged and the govenor kicked in while the tracks had good ground engagement. ... well the next sound would be expensive ( final drives, transmissions, etc.)

Just my .02

Sweet little motors.
Can't say enough good things about it.
sweet deal and since I got one thought Id' pass it on to someone else.
What I have noticed is since I have field pads, non cleated, track always slips before I break the finals anyway, so maybe the 2-71 could be put in.
Iam sticking with the 2-53 though.
sweet motors.

On the subject of engines, you would think that the weak link would be the clutch. But, I know from experience that the clutch will not slip and the finals will shear the bull gear teeth. The clutch arrangement is very good. The 2-53 develops alot of low end torque. The 2-71 would just be a shreading machine to the final drive of one of these crawlers. Just my opinion, Tom.
