New guy, intro and adding fuel gauge to 455D Q's

Post by jd455Djc » Tue Sep 15, 2009 10:53 am

Hi everyone!

Been reading for some time, but now have to ask some questions, so registered. Hope it's not too much trouble.

My name is John and I'm in Western PA. We have in the collection (mine, buddy's, shared, etc) a 1970 straight 450 dozer, 1989 410C TLB, 198? 450C crawler loader, 197? crawler loader backhoe, and the newest addition a 1985 455D crawler loader- backhoe removed.

We mostly get someone else's leftovers and fix them up to use them. You know the story- either be rich or get greasy. I get greasy :) No complaints, just end up doing lots of stuff and have to learn how.

So here's the question:

On the 455D, the fuel tank is upright behind the seat and does not have a fuel gauge. We keep the tank locked and I want to add a fuel gauge.

I plan to use AT61468 gauge, which is a JD gauge for the 450G. It will match the others nicely and I believe I can fit it in the dash with the help of a hole saw.

What I don't know is the resistance range (Ohms) of this gauge. I've read that some of the JD gauges are 240-33 Ohms.

Can anyone confirm this info? Anyone suggest a sending unit that is a reasonable price?

I am expecting to cut a hole in the tank to mount the sending unit.

I have to rewire the dash anyways for the new ignition switch (old one is worn out).

BTW, this is a great site with lots of good info on it and I am glad to have found it!

Thanks in advance.

Your crawler has a stock dipstick fuel gauge that goes down the small hole in the fill hole and I wouldn't bother trying to install an electric gauge as they take more than a hole in the dash they also take a specific sized hole in the tank and also baffles in the tank to prevent fuel from sloshing an electric gauge will never work worth a darn after several weeks anyway. The G series was a great dozer and I have had 5 or 6 of them but the worse working part on them was that stupid fuel gauge We just never tried to keep the darn thing working find a dip stick from a wreckers for a 450-450B-450C--450D- 455D-450E or 455E any of them will fit your dozer the sloshing action from that tank will be too much for any electric gauge made. More fuel gauge info

Post by jd455Djc » Wed Sep 16, 2009 5:55 pm

Thanks for the reply. I've already ordered the components. I hope your predictions don't come to show, but it's too late anyways.

The hole in the tank and dash isn't a problem, as I can borrow a plasma cutter. We plan to drain and remove the tank anyways as a once-over since this machine is new to us.

We'll rinse it out with water and fill about half way with water to cut (keeps slag from sticking to the bottom).

Here is the info I found for the gauge and sending unit.

JD part number AT104809 fuel gauge for 450G (and others).

0-180 Ohm

Empty is 10 Ohms
Half is 100 Ohms
Full is 180 Ohms

I hadn't thought about the sloshing... :(

The parts I ordered are aftermarket. Guess we'll find out...

If you need to build one do it like the H and J series that sender will hold up but to purchase it a new set of tracks will seem cheep .Deere used a tube from the bottom to the top of the tank with small holes top and bottom the sending unit is smart enough to judge distance solid state and will not wear out build one of those and it will last for ever when the track chuck moves the fuel the float just gets torn out of a regular sending unit as the baffling of the tank was never meant for a sender unit that is why John Deere and the others never gauged dozers till the late eighty's.And don't remove the baffling from that tank as that is how the tank is held together .If you want a fuel gauge that works spend some bucks and get a H or J series and get a cab and air I have 1 H series and 4 J series a 450J three 550Js and a 650H that is how I got fuel gauges 100G each plus .My Deere sales man tells me that the next series are being tested now cloaked as Js but totally different machines good luck on that fuel gauge .Digitup.
