Dozer wanted

I live in Western SD, and am looking for a decent used dozer. Doesn't have to be a JD as long as it is mechanically sound. Let me know what you have and transport options. I deal in cash.

I reckon from the sounds of crickets chirping, nobody has or knows of a decent dozer for sale. Thanks much, I'll look elsewhere.

If yu can stand the shipping costs there was a pretty fair 440ICD posted in this forum. It is in central Kentucky and the owners name was Troy, I don't know if it is still available or not.

Thank you both for that information. Unfortunately, shipping for either machine would come close to their purchase prices. I could probably haul it on my 18 ft trailer, but it would still be roughly 3000 miles round-trip. I just can't make that option make sense.

Man two whole days and you are leaving because no one has responded? If you are that big of a hurry, I am sure RDO in Souix Falls has some on the lot.

Who said I was "leaving"? I simply said I would look elsewhere. As in, other sources. Yes I'm sure there are plenty of machines available from more than one dealer even closer than Sioux Falls. If I were able to pay their prices, I'd have gone to one of them in the first place.

RD,
It might help if you described more specificly what you are looking for such as how big, loader or dozer, occasional or everyday use and what you want to do with it. Your location may limit your responces as I don't remember a ton of members on the board from SD.
A lot of the members here are hobby and occasional use owners with 50 and 60 year old machines so maybe didn't think they had anything to offer. Your last sentence caught my eye about cash but I have a 49 year old 440 that is fully operational, but operationaly sound? who knows and it is in michigan so no reply. Not wanting to sell anyway.

Hey RD-

I have some co-workers local to your area (Nemo, Sturgis) who are into older tractors and crawlers- I'll see if they know of anything. It would be helpful to know what size dozer you would like and your price range. Usually lower prices mean more work is needed.

In the meantime I'll try to keep an eye out for local crawlers for you on the sites I frequent- however I don't see that many advertised in the Rapid City area.

I need the dozer to remove a hillside, or rather to flatten it out to make a level spot to put up a 30X40 shop building. I will use the soil to fill in low spots on site so it will just be a matter of pushing the dirt to the sides untill I get it to the level I want. Once I have that task completed, I will decide whether to keep it or sell it, depending on how much I have to pay to get the dozer. When I finally got someone to bid on the job, his first guestimate was 2 days work at $130 per hour. When he called 2 days later, he wanted to quote it at so much per yard, totaling around $6000. I declined to hire him, figuring for his $6000 bid, I could find other solutions.
I have a tractor, loader, box scraper and backhoe for leveling and digging. I can do the job with that if I have to, but it would go so much faster with a decent dozer.
Price range; well that of course will depend on the dozer, and how much work it will need to keep it going. Sizewise, a JD450 would be ideal, but a smaller one will have some advantages too.

Have you considered renting a dozer or loader rather than purchasing? The reason I ask is that you can rent one for one day much cheaper than buying one and not have the worry of a 50+ year machine breaking on you.

I went that route first, renting a CAT 939HST crawler loader to do major grading, excavating and tree removal. I then followed up by purchasing a smaller JD crawler loader (2010) for the finer work and as an ongoing machine for my general farm work. I was glad to rent first so I knew what I was getting into.

I used the CAT Store; they don't require you to be a contractor to rent and their rate was reasonable (I think it was around $500/day or $1400/week for that crawler loader). You will not be able to purchase a decent used dozer for that cost.

It's just a suggestion, but sounds like it may be a better solution for you than buying. In the meantime, I have found several dozers for sale in Nebraska and Wyoming in the $5K to $10K range. While most of them say they are running machines, you should assume that all of them will require some form of maintenance or repair in the near future. None of these older machines are trouble-free.
