2-53 liner kit

Post by jdaxle » Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:04 pm

hello, I am a newbie to the forum. Thanks for the service! I was wondering about the difference in cyinder kits for the 2-53 eng. I'm told that I should use type n w/higher compression. If that is true why did they use the lower comression type s in the 440 and 435? Also, if I change it over to the type n, what else do I need to do to protect the rest of the drivetrain. Will I need different injectors? Any help on what and where to get these would be appreciated. Thanks again.

The N series parts are the replacement/updated parts, the old series parts are no longer available.
The higher compression is not to add horsepower, it is to facilitate better starting. With the N series pistons, you also SHOULD install the N series injectors.
Two other things I would:
Have the head looked at and make sure that the valve seats are not sunken too far down in the head, this redusces compression, and everything you can get on a 53 series helps.
Take the blower in and have the updated seals installed. It will require some refitting, but a good Detroit shop should have the tool to do it. The new seals help to prevent blower seal leakage, and reduce the potential for a runaway.
As far as parts, I can get parts for you, or check with your local Detroit shop.

2-53 liner kit

Lavoy, I'm going to be tearing down my newly aquired 440ICD because of intermix. The previous owner said that he put new liners in awhile back, now it has coolant in the oil. He drained it and added diesel fuel to crankcase to keep it from corroding. I'm aware of the o'rings and that he doesn't remember putting them in. In the case that it isn't the o'rings, what else can I look for while I pressure test the cooling sys. I'll probably have the pan off when I do this to see if I can see the leak. Also, since there isn't many hours on the new liners, how can I tell which style that they are. They were put in over 4 years ago. thanks

My assumption is that the N series kits have been out from quite some time. A Detroit Diesel dealer should be able to verify this for you.
I think liners on a 53 series can be tricky, I know there are oversize liners as far as the O.D. This may be to compensate for wear in the block, but that is a question better asked of someone with a lot more Detroit experience than myself.
If he does not remember putting the o-rings in, that might be a bad sign. I think it is also possible to roll the o-ring on installation, which will cause a leak as well.
Barring that, look for head gasket leak, and if you have the head off, have it magnafluxed to be safe.

thanks, Lavoy, I plan on sending the head out to a friend of mine to have it redone. I'll let you know how it turns out.
