Switchhappy,

I havent been inside of a 2-53 so I don't know if this helps or not

Cylinder Head
and Gaskets
PRE-INSTALLATION INSPECTION
The following inspections should be mad e
just prior to installing the cylinder head o n
the engine. These inspections should be
made regardless of whether the head wa s
removed from engine for servicing only the
head assembly or to facilitate other repair s
to the engine .
1. Check cylinder liner flange height wit h
relationship to the cylinder block, as out -
lined in Group 25 of this section .
2. Check to be sure tops of pistons are
clean and free of foreign material .
3. Check to see that ALL of the push
rods are threaded into their clevis until th e
end of the push rod projects through the
clevis. This is important since serious engine
damage will be prevented when the engine
is cranked or barred over durin g
tune-up .
4. Check cylinder block and cylinder
head gasket surfaces and counterbores t o
ascertain that these sealing surfaces are
clean and free from foreign material .
INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD
1. Install NEW cylinder liner compression
gasket, flange side down, on each cylinder
liner .
2. Place NEW seal rings in counterbor e
of water and oil holes in cylinder block .
Install NEW oil seal in groove around
perimeter of cylinder block .
NOTE : Used compression gaskets, wate r
and oil seal rings or oil seal around
perimeter of block should never b e
reused.
3. To successfully install the cylinde r
head without disturbing the gaskets and
seals, guide studs must be used. Make two
studs to dimensions shown in Fig . 60-10-1 ,
or use guide stud J7866 . Place the cylinde r
head guide studs, diagonally opposite, in end
cylinder head bolt holes in cylinder block.
Wipe under side of cylinder head clean
and lower head onto block.
A final visual check of all cylinder head
gaskets and seals should be made to ensure
that they are in place just before the cylinder
head is lowered onto the cylinder block .
This is a very important check . Compression
gaskets and seals which are jarred out
of their proper position will lead to leak s
and "blow-by" with resultant poor engine
performance and damage to engine .
4. The cylinder head should be gradually
and uniformly drawn down against the hea d
gaskets and seals to ensure uniform compression
of gaskets and to assure a good
seal between the head and block .
Install cylinder head-to-block bolts . The
flat-head bolts are used on the balance side ,
or left side, of the cylinder head . Begin o n
camshaft side of head first to take up tension
in cam follower springs, and draw bolt s
down hand tight . Then, tighten with a socket
wrench. Finally, beginning at the center an d
working toward each end of the cylinde r
head, draw bolts down to 170-180 ft-lb torque
with a torque wrench, about 1/2 turn a t
a time.
5. Set injector control tube assembly in
place on cylinder head and tighten hold-dow n
bolts, finger tight only . When positioning
control tube be sure that all pins on the injector
control rack levers engage the slot s
in the injector control racks . With one en d
of the return spring hooked around one injector
rack control lever and the other en d
hooked around the control tube bracket ,
tighten bracket bolts to cylinder head with a
7/16-inch universal socket wrench . After
tightening, revolve tube and see if the re -
turn spring pulls the injector racks to OF F
position after they have been moved all the
way inward. (FULL FUEL POSITION) . If any
bind exists in the mechanism, loosen tub e
bracket hold-down bolts and shift the assembly
slightly to remove all bind . The injector
racks MUST return to the OFF position
freely by aid of the return spring only .
DO NOT bend the return spring to bring
about this condition .
6. Connect link between the injecto r
control tube and the bell crank .
7. Install the exhaust manifold, thermostat
housing and thermostat .
8. Install water hose and hole clamps.
9. Connect fuel lines .
10. Fill cooling system and check fo r
leaks.
11. With shut-off control in OFF position,
crank engine over to see that all part s
function freely .
12. Before starting engine, perform
tune-up as outlined in Section 40.

Basic Engine
Cylinder Head
and Gaskets
13. After starting engine, see that al l
fuel line connections are tight to insure tha t
no fuel oil leaks into the cylinder head compartment
to dilute the lubricating oil .
Run engine until normal operating temperature
of 160°-185°F. has been attained .
Then, recheck torque of cylinder head bolts.
14. Recheck engine tune-up .
15. Examine all fuel oil, lubricating oi l
and water connections for possible leaks ,
and correct any which are discovered .
16. Install the valve rocker cover and
gasket .
