450c steering clutch overflowing

Post by 76450c » Sun Mar 22, 2026 12:36 pm

Have a 76 450c, took it down to change final drive and now the opposite steering clutch is filling up and not draining back into transmission fast enough for it to build pressure. it is common sump and has never had this problem. so when i check trans it shows empty but left steering clutch is full to the top! Any ideas?

So I always fill these through the transmission and the clutch housings. I'm thinking if you just wait a bit it will eventually settle into the other cavities. I divide the oil into thirds and that way it seems to settle in quicker.

Now that the trans pressure is back to 160ish I cant get the right track to work. Worked fine before taking final drive off and all linkages to rebushing, with trans guage when i pull back left steering lever guage jumps about 50 p.s.i., pull right steering handle back it jumps maybe 4-5 psi. When I pulled off both steering covers at swap they seemed fine, hoses in each common sump seemed normal. Left steering clutch works fine, right you pull back and nothing.

Looked through whole manual many of times, I think I’ve figured it out without it. The linkage that holds the adjusting nut on the brake band is all the way down on the bottom of the pin, so when you pull up it doesn’t turn the brake linkage. At idea how to get the slack out of it? Read hundreds of forums and manual and nothing
