440 ICD Rebuild-Disassembled

Hey,

Well I got busy the last couple of days, so I have some new pictures of my 440. It is completly a-part and today was cleaning day. I loaded the motor, finals, trans, bell housing and reverser case in the back of my pick-up and headed to the steam cleaners. I have to say it was one heavy load. Monday I plan on sand blasting and a coat of primer on everything but the engine. I brought it back with me to set up on the engine stand to start tearing it down. It is nice to see all the grease removed. I have found a few problems.

Here's the power plant.



Here are a few of the problems.
A damaged Trans. Case.



Damaged seal in left final. Notice all the gear oil.



Chipped Pinion Gear. This too was in the left final.



Damage to throw-out bearing in the right steering clutch.



When I looked through the spline hole from the left to right steering clutch I found this spring, I'm guessing it doesn't belong there. Any ideas?



Right steering clutch housing. Needs seal replaced.



And finally the bear under carriage.

When you guys primer your parts, is there a special primer you use?

Do not throw that spring away. It does belong, at least on a 1010. I don't have my manual in front of me so I can not tell you the name of the part. I am sure that one of the more Knowledgable members of this board will reply with the name/part# before I get out to my shop, but if not I will give a further explaination Mark

Please keep the pictures with updates coming. It is great to see one torn down and the various issues that are found.
I see yours is a 1960 model.

I did save the spring, that is one thing I need to order from JD is a shop manual, I just found it in the parts manual, however I am unclear of it's purpose. It was just laying in there.

Nice pictures, I appreciate the work in tearing it down, then stopping to take the pictures.

The spring fits between the two axle shafts in the differential spool. My guess is that this minimizes the axial motion of the axle shaft in the spool, since the movement of the clutches on the hub of the other end of the axle shaft would tend to slide the axle in the spool as the steering clutch is engaged and disengaged.

Check the splines deep in the differential spool very closely, it is an area of high wear.
