Post by NNAATZ » Wed Nov 14, 2007 9:37 am

what have you guys been doing to keep the brake band from cocking and hanging up on the pin? i fought with it last night then finally got it square on the drum buy working it with some rods and sliding the drive on dawls. is there something that i missed?

Brake band in the way

Post by emmett » Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:25 pm

NNAATZ,

I think I know what you're talking about here.... If you mean a 420C...

I had some trouble to slide the re-assembled final drive and housing back into place because the brake-band kept cocking on the drum.

I loosened the brake as much as possible. I paid special attention to the load-leveler on the engine hoist (from which the final drive hung). Once I got the final drive assembly balanced and level, I could sneak it inside the brake band without it cocking.. (much... still had to reach in from the top opening with a catspaw to push the band back into place on the drum.)

I usually pull the band outside of the housing a little bit, and get it started on the drum before I slide the final in. Also push out on the band with a bar from the inside like Emmett said.

sorry i did not mention that i was a 420. it took three tries to figure what was happening. i ended doing just as you guys had said. at least now i some 1/2" rods bent to help hold and push that can be slid in to the bottom of the housing.
thanks, nick
