420 transmission/differental

Post by country53 » Sun Jun 25, 2006 5:28 pm

I was attempting to take my transmission out todayand found a nut, that holds the steering clutch housing on, to be rusted such that there were no flats or corners. I know I can blow the nut off the stud but is the stud replaceable? The nut is one of 4 inside the housing that are 13/16.
Is it necassary to remove that housing to replace ring and pinion or will it come out with the transmission?

Can you get an air chiesel in there at an angle, If so you can sometimes loosen the nut up with this and then use vise grips to take it off the rest of the way.

You can replace the stud if necessary, however, you can pull the bearing quill out without removing the steering clutch housings. But, if the nut is rusted that bad, you maybe should look at replacing it anyway. They is a lot of stress on those studs, and you don't want them to loosen up, trust me.

Sears, and I'm sure others sells a set of "easy offs" ? that fit over rounded nut and bolt heads that grip like easy outs. My experance has been good with them. Not sure if they go up big enough for you.
They also have a wrench that just grips the flats....looks weird, I was given a set as a gift, I didn't think much of them by looking, was surprised how well they work when I did try one, especially on rounded nuts/bolts. they don't grip the corners, just the flats......Good reason for more tools !!
