Finding Top dead center
Hey everyone, im very new to working on these machines or older machines in general. I have to pull my injection pump because of the gasket material that is causing it to lose power and quit. I would like to know how exactly you tell when your on tdc to remove the pump. i know i have to be right on so what is the best way without removing the valve cover. any help is much appreciated.

add to that
how bout can anyone tell me how to remove the pump all together. I have done the obvious, taking all the fuel lines off and so on but kinda stuck on the rest. what all needs to come off to do this?

Removal depends on what model pump you have. It's either a D series or a C series and they are totally different in the way are removed.dieselhead87 wrote:how bout can anyone tell me how to remove the pump all together. If it is truly a 450B with the original engine, it will have a D series pump. Either a Stanadyne Roosamaster JDB431AL2475, JDB435AL2442, or a JDB435MD2802.
For that, you take the timing window off the side of the pump. Then rotate the engine until the two lines in the window are visible and lined-up. At that point, the engine should be on TDC of the compression stroke. To make sure, you can take out the special timing-pin-bolt from the engine, turn it over, and stick the pin-end back into the hole. Jiggle the flywheel back and forth until the pin locks into the timing hole in the flywheel. Then are are perfect TDC.
After all that, just remove the two bolts or nuts that hold the pump onto the engine. Also, disconnnect the lines by removing the four banjo-bolts. You also will need to either loosen the injector lines at the other ends (at the injectors), or just remove them entirely. Unhook all other hoses, lines, and linkage. Tie the throttle-arm back with a piece of wire so there is some tension on it. Then, just pull the pump off, sliding it towards the rear. On some engines, you might have to remove a coolant pipe if you have a block heater attached. The pump slides off the pump driveshaft and that driveshaft stays attached to the engine. It will flop around, but will not come off, or jump out of time.
With "C" pumps, like used on many 450s, the shaft comes off WITH the pump, unlike the "D" pumps.

cant find the line
I cant find the second timing mark. I see the stationary one that is on the rear of window but i keep clicking the engine over and have never seen it. I've spent quite a bit of time looking and it never came around. And the special timing pin, is that located directly behind the pump on the block. Its a 3/4 nut you remove and turn around? I know this shouldnt be so complicated but i am just nervous to screw it up.i have pics of what i am talking about cant get them posted.[/img]
