Jd 440c won’t move

Post by AURICPIPE » Fri Oct 23, 2020 2:44 pm

Have a 440c was moving one side of final drive only. Was able to free up the other side and both were working. Then the thing just stopped moving does not even try. Wondering what to check. Main clutch was not working but drove fine. As of now grinds when you put it in gear and pto is working. Maybe something in the reverser? Any ideas

Welcome to the board. Just an FYI your 440 (Is it a 440IC gasoline engine or a 440ICD diesel engine, there was no plain C for the 440 series) posts should be on the Early Models Board, and will likely get moved over to that board by a moderator. What is your general location? You never know there might be someone in your area who might be able to look it over with you.

Do you have right John Deere manuals for your machine? Did you check engine clutch, reverser clutches and steering clutch adjustments as laid out in the manual? Those checks and adjustment are the normal starting point, but it sounds like you might have deeper problems.

The more detailed info you can provide the better we can help you figure it out, as we aren't there and can't see it. When you say the main clutch was not working but drove fine, what do you mean? It won't disengage so you have to start it in gear or have you been jamming it in while the engine is running? You say it grinds when you put it in gear please explain a bit more. Is this grinding when you are trying to put it in gear, or you put it in gear but it just sits there and grinds, won't move forward or reverse? Is this the same in all transmission gears and neutral, as well as both directions in the reverser? How is the oil level in the reverser? How is the oil level in the transmission? Were you pushing when it quit? You said one final drive was moving and you freed up the other side. How/what did you do to free that side? Can you narrow the grinding noise to an area? (Keep running it to a minimum, as best you can while checking.)

sounds to me like your main clutch is NOT releasing.

as mentioned by JimB, your machine probably needs proper adjustment to the main clutch....and both steering brakes and clutches as well as checking for proper lube in the reverser....

you will need to read everything posted about your jd440 on this site to learn problems and solutions.
the manuals are very important and procedures may have to be performed more than one time to get them correctly adjusted...

keep updates on here as you progress...
