Some NOOB questions....

Post by 64crew4x4 » Wed Feb 10, 2016 12:20 pm

Hello guys and Gals.
I am a mechanic and fabricator, and Am about to possibly buy my first Crawler.... I am told this crawler is a 420. 4 cyl. Diesel. Runs but will not move....First Guess clutches done or stuck....?

I am buying this to be used at our Bow Range to clear black berries, and under brush on trails 3-4 times a year, and Do general trail clearing.

I have a Few Noobie Questions....I tried reading thru some posts but did not find what I was After.

So this Crawler, I am assuming is a Mid 50's machine...? it has hydro lift for front Blade....I am not sure if it has Anything out the rear....

The Blade on it now is just up and down.....

Is it possible to find or marry a 6 way blade to this Set up...?

If it does not have anything out the Rear, is it also possible to set it up with PTO drive or hydro for rear attachments...?

And Last NOOB question..... It is Open Cockpit now , no cage....
Is there provisions to mount and Fabricate a Cage..?
And Is the Big Difference between MC and Reg 420 just the Grill guard...?

I am going to be in berries and Brush, so I need operator and Engine Protection....

Thanks in Advance for any help.....I am going to look at this Lil Monster this Coming weekend.....

Thanks, John in Oregon.

Hi,

4 cyl diesel...not a 420, which is 2 cyl gas only. And not a 440, also 2 cyl gas or diesel with the GM 2-53 option.

Maybe a 1010 or the larger 2010. That is early 60s. Both had PAT options. Both had PTOs and 3-pt hitches were options.

Also, the mid 60s saw the JD450 replace the 2010. I suppose it could be an early 450....

As far as MC v. 420, there were so many differences they are pretty much completely different machines. There was a lot of product development with the M and 40 and 420 series.

Runs but will not move....depends on exactly what machine is actually is, but yes, it could be that both steering clutches are slip-o-matics at this point. But, then it may be reverser, or transmission as well. The details differ by model when it comes to those parts.

" just will not steer, so I am Thinking frozen, rusty clutches?" MOST likely problem.... sounds like 1010 or 2010 as STAN said ...they were the first 4 cylinders

Hi,

Ah. Move in a Straight Line is probably stuck together steering clutches. That is a bit better than Won't Move at all. I was thinking Won't Move and that got me to thinking reverser (1010) or HLR Trans (2010)....

Yes. Pics. We can tell what it is from pics.

Hi,

Oh, we do understand how the Telephone Game goes. It also is more fun if the machine is in the weeds, trees or an old barn or under an old tarp. ;)

There is one Serial plate for the machine and one on the attachment (dozer or loader). This regardless of the model of the machine. The locations vary by model, though.

Stan

Edit: and, sometimes a Deere crawler winds up being something else, too. That is how I wound up with a Terratrac which was sworn to be an MC at the time.... :P

New Crawler

Post by JimAnderson » Wed Feb 10, 2016 7:52 pm

The first thing you might want to consider about the two cylinder crawlers is that until the 440 all were designed for the agricultural market. As they evolved and other uses for them were contemplated
things like cages and engine shielding were designed and offered.
If these options are not on the machine now you will have to fabricate them as finding something like an operator cage will be hard to come by 60 years out. That said in good condition these little machines are capable of a lot of work but keep in mind that a sixty year old crawler
can be a money pit. This may not be what you want to hear but I
feel you should know what to expect.Luck,JimAnderson
