A old 455-E help.

Hi,

Thanks for the update on the 455G. My first-hand being around what JD was up to ends before then. That applies to the Ag side as well. There is a vacuum between 1982 and 1998 where I was paying zero attention until I wanted to buy a brand new Ag machine in 1998 and had to essentially begin all over again. And, I have not looked at the industrial side at all.

As you can see, they have an industrial tractor section. As already pointed out, not as complete as the Ag section is.

Jim this is AWESOME! It’s the exact same copy I have but I can read your, it’s got everything I need to put it together properly. Thank you Sir, you have been so helpful with this project and I can’t thank you enough for everything. I’m very serious about buying you & your wife dinner. No need to send me anything. Get it running and put the dinner money towards helping your brother get at least the TM1330OP manual. It has troubleshooting, diagnostic, and testing info you may need in the future. Use the link I gave you in my first post to go the JD construction and forestry bookstore. While you are there you can download the Operator's Manual for free. Click the download icon and it will take a minute, but it will download and you can save it to your computer, then you can print from it anytime you want. They do charge if you want printed, USB, or CD copies. All the other manuals they charge for.

These days, after you buy the Diesel to fill it up, you won't have any money left for dinner for yourself, much less anyone else....

Still, the work you can do with one of these per gallon is, literally as well as figuratively, Dirt Cheap.

Jim, I’m not giving my tight brother no dinner money because he’s not paying me a dime for doing all this work . Even though I guess I should help with the book, because I have a feeling this isn’t going to be the end of working on it and the book would be very helpful to me and save a lot of headaches . Thanks again Jim .

Stan, I’m leaving the fuel tank for my brother to worry about . I don’t know why he even got it, because the only he does is ride around on the property looking for trees to push over , I guess maybe some stress relief ‍♂️.

Welcome to the Boards.

A bit of housekeeping. Do not be surprised to find your thread on your brother's 455E moved to the Late Models Board. A 455E is not considered an old machine by most here, as many here have machines 1010C, 2010C and prior machines that are covered on this Early Models Board.

Looking at the serial number you posted compared to some for sale online, I am going to say your brother's machine is a very late 1987 or a 1988 machine. There aren't the open published lists for industrial equipment that are readily available for Ag and Turf tractors.

The 455E uses a two-volume manual set, you really should have both manuals. For the electrical info you need John Deere technical manual TM1330OP (Operation and testing). This manual has the testing and diagnostic info for the entire machine (it also covers the 450E crawler with dozer blade). the schematics are broken into several systems; they didn't use just one complete schematic for the total electrical system.

The repair info (the wrench turning) is in JD technical Manual TM1330RE (Repair). You can find the manuals (pre-owned) on eBay at times. You can get new manuals direct from the John Deere Construction and Forestry Bookstore. Below is a link to it.

Type 455E in the model search box and click the search icon found at the right of the Search Term box. It should give you the recommended manuals for the 455E. There is a phone number on the home page if you want to talk with a representative of the bookstore regarding ordering. The manuals are not inexpensive.

Jim as a newbe myself the thing that is confusing is that i did not know there was a jd model 2010 so "Lindeman through 2010 John Deere crawler" to me meant everything build before 2010 goes here, not models newer than the JD model 2010 don't go here, if that makes sense.

If you didn't follow that in my first reply about housekeeping to RAMSr, that may be a missing link in this discussion, along with you not realizing there was a 2010 crawler (and also a 1010 crawler). The 1010 and 2010 (crawlers and wheel tractors) were the transition models from the 2-cylinder engines to the 4-cylinder engines. They were only built 1961 to 1965, and not terribly popular. The 1010C and 2010C were replaced by the 350 and 450 crawlers which had better engines and drive trains. For the wheel tractors the 1020 and 2020 replaced the 1010 and 2010, with similar improvements.

This thread is now on the Late Models Board. Models 2010 and those built before the 1010 and 2010 (435, 430, 420, 40, MC, and Linderman) do not belong on this board.

The Early Models Board description of "Linderman through 2010" would cover build years up to 1965, the end of the 1010/2010 build.

The 350 and 450 series were built after the 1010 and 2010 crawlers. They started in late 1965 and continued since with upgrades and replacement models. Thus the 350, 450 and the newer crawlers (letter series of the 350 and 450, 4555, 550, 555, 650, 655, etc.) belong on this Late Models Board as they were built in the later years (1966 to current), after the 2010 stopped in 1965.

I know I repeated some things here but hope it helps your understanding. Stan May be along with more as he was involved with a family JD dealership through the change over years.

Well as a newbie and not to good with computers I’m lucky to get it posted anywhere . I really do appreciate everyone’s help, like how my post got moved to the proper place because I really didn’t how to move it and what year model went where, but with the help I received, I now have a little clearer understanding on this forum. Everyone has helped me and I appreciate their input. And Mr Jim B really helped me so much and it isn’t hard to see the amount knowledge this man has. My experiences were mostly on Caterpillar i got certified on a couple machines and several of Caterpillar engines and that was mainly what I did, rebuilding some of those monsters and right before I left Caterpillar I was beginning to build some turbos and a little bit work on injection pumps and that’s been about 30 years ago and I doubt I can remember any of those things today. Found a really nice job with a large Power Company and that’s were I stayed for almost 30 years and wow did I worked on some strange things, like only one ever build . Anyway this is a great forum and thanks for the people who made it run so nice . Till the next time
