Locknuts on connecting rod bearing cap bolts?

Post by Welsh » Thu Dec 11, 2025 8:16 am

So I'm finally getting the 420C engine back together! This is my first engine assembly experience ever, so warning you all that there will probably be a lot of "stupid questions".

First one: What do you guys with experience use for locknuts on the rod bearing caps?
I kept the "locknuts" that were on it, but read somewhere that you shouldn't reuse them. The closest thing I could find is "Pal nuts" from an aircraft company, but am also reading that some people question the necessity or the effectivity of these. I decided I need real input from people I trust!

Thanks

It is kind of personal preference. I personally have put very few back on. They certainly don't hurt anything or Deere wouldn't have used them to start with. Lots and lots of higher HP, higher RPM engines that never used them.

The PAL nuts have not been used when reassembling aircraft engines for many years. I have removed them from an aircraft engine case through bolts a long time ago but haven't seen them in use since.
