hey everyone, looking for some guidance

Post by KPaXz » Wed Oct 08, 2025 11:24 am

i hear there is a message board here that teaches one how to use the clutch plate adjuster tool. the tool is metal, flat and has a few cutout guides on it. there's suppose to be a way to use it for adjusting john deere 420c clutch pressure plates. any direction to where this guide might be on the message board? ive looked and cannot seem to find it, thanks

I think there several copies of the service bulletin # 286 about the tool floating around in different threads here. Here is a photo of it.

so an update on the clutch pressure plate and tension fingers. the nut and bolt that adjusts the clutch plate fingers are so seized up i cannot loosen them. I've sprayed them down several times with PB blaster, no luck. starting to look like ill have to find replacement nuts and bolts and drill the old ones out or buy a used/new clutch pressure plate. any suggestions are welcomed. thanks in return

About the only pressure plates I have rebuilt for years are the two stage ones on bigger tractors that cost a lot more. I know costs add up but a 420C pressure plate is not expensive compared to the ones I am used to, nor is a complete clutch kit. Springs can be weak, pins worn, etc. which can reduce service life.

If you buy a pressure plate, buy a new one. My personal choice, I would have put all new clutch parts in for the cost of a 420 clutch vs the risk of doing the job over. What new clutch parts have you installed? Lavoy sells quality parts at fair prices, if you need.

This is one of the main reasons I never reuse pressure plates, total PITA.
New ones on the shelf.

thank you guys. the only parts I've installed so far is the clutch plates. did some electric wire brush cleaning on some mild rust within the clutch plate housing. my left side steering handle is completely seized up. going to have to tear that apart ASAP. was a miracle i got that old girl out in the middle of winter when i did.

To be clear are you working on the engine clutch or a steering clutch? They all get adjusted with the tool, but some related answers to question might be different depending on which clutch.
