This was a 3 year project adding a backhoe attachment to my crawler. I think it turned out pretty good. Are there any other crawlers out there with this attachment?

Crawler backdozer/bullhoe?
Re: Crawler backdozer/bullhoe?
looks like an older 91 series side slide (offset-able) mount thats cut and added a cat 4bt hoe, ? i might be all wrong on that but I was looking at doing about the same thing,
my biggest problem in there is no old JD stuff around here. i like how you have it, that took alot of work. bullhoe is a good name for it
what did you put on it for a pump? is that a 20" bucket?

Re: Crawler backdozer/bullhoe?
I’m not sure what the hoe attachment came off of, it had been sitting behind my buddy’s uncle’s barn for decades. It was very rusty and everything was seized, we had to replace all the cylinders and get a new part machined for the turret.
We were able to increase the pressure of the existing pump and then doubled the number of bolts to the cover to prevent a blowout.
A smaller bucket would work better, it handles sand and loose dirt pretty well but refuses to make much of an impact on hard clay. We did add the claws to the bucket and that did make a significant difference.

Re: Crawler backdozer/bullhoe?
one of the problems that shows up on these units with a backhoe is breaking the final drive housing.
the 420's had a thinner casting and would crack right off.
the Later model 440's and 1010's had thicker castings.
all I would say is , don't get rough with the hoe and be bouncing around or dragging it sideways.
I am guilty of that myself, sometimes you just wish you had a bigger machine.
One of my crawly's had a J-hook mounted hoe and the previous owner did bust the housing.
So it sat for a long time with about a 1.5" cracked, splayed out housing,,, they robbed the hoe off of it,
when i came to own it, I took a chain and load binder and squeezed it all together and danged if that didn't work just fine.
was able to get it moving , thou now its just a parts machine.

Re: Crawler backdozer/bullhoe?
Thanks for the heads up on that. I don’t plan to be doing a lot of digging with it. It’s more of a toy… Guess I still have a bit of that seven-year-old kid in me that likes to play in the sandbox once in a while.
Although it did come in real handy earlier this summer, removing an old playground set where the posts had been cemented 3 feet into the ground. With the increased pressure I have now on the hydraulics, I really have to watch the side swing as it moves rather quickly from one side to the other.
