The boot for the tilt cylinder has rotted off a long time ago so for now a race winning Hoosier Dirt Boss tire will do the duty.

After working the dozer for 2 hours the blade wouldn’t stay up. The lift cylinder on the right side has different paint and a sticker from a hydraulic repair shop so I put a spare cylinder on the left side and went back to work.

4 hours on on the hour meter. Engine is running very good. Track tensioners are holding, The special order master pin retainer is wired and ready. Left side steering clutch and brake are working good with the brazed up adjuster. Right side clutch seemed good the brake band has oil on it but is working for now. Reverser is working good. The Carco winch isn’t working. We have some more work for it so will be getting a better idea of how long until both finals need to come out.

The front cross shaft flanges have all the bolts missing and have been welded in place. The welds to the shaft are broken so I broke the left track for more room to reweld. The left side master pin also has the very rare optional high strength master pin retainer that was on the right side. This retainer is made from a smaller gauge mechanics wire than the one on the right side but also had done its job.
Maybe proof that “size doesn’t matter”.

18 hours of work since the engine rebuild, the spare lift cylinder started leaking oil at the shaft seal so new cups and o-rings went in the take off. Back in operation.

21 hours on the rebuild. Good oil pressure (for a detroit) steering clutches and brakes working ok. Still chasing hydraulic hose and cylinder leaks. The #64 6 way blade is MUCH handier than the #602 4 way. The engine has a 180 degree thermostat hasn’t been over 185.
In the fall the dozer will get moved a few blocks in town to work where the 440ICD 602 is working now.

Nothing runs like a Deere. Especially if it runs with a screamin Jimmy.

Hi,

The only 2-53 equipped machine I had experience with was the 435 wheel tractor. Running a 3-string baler with the 1000 RPM PTO.

That said, I do recall it sounding like an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Later, the same baler was behind a 4020. Talk about a difference in machines! But, the 4020 wasn't really all that better when it came to baling with that baler. The 435 was a good match for it.

For most people the 2 stroke 53 series Detroit Diesel is a love it or hate it experience. I am in the love it group both operating/driving them and rebuilding them. If I was operating a dozer 12 hours a day it would be a much newer JD or Cat. I keep watching for a 435 or 440 wheel tractor for sale close by but haven’t found one yet.

Hi,

I saw a lot of busted 435 tractors back in the 70s. Ripped out ring gears. Seems as the 2-53 overpowered the 430 driveline when using the drawbar. Where it shined was when using the 1000 RPM PTO on that baler. And, I think that was the idea in the first place. However farmers would see that power and stick too many plow bottoms on, or too large a disc.

My uncle took one in on trade one time for a 1530 and I wanted it. But it sounded like it had a coffee can full of lug nuts under the seat. It moved, but the real question was for how long? Dad said it wasn't worth us fixing it. But, then, many years later he took on this M (which I still have) which had the front end busted off with wrecked pistons and all. Water down the stack, then froze, then idiots trying to pull start it behind a truck.

Maybe, though, dad felt that fixing that mess wasn't so hard as we didn't have to pull that back end apart like the 435 would have required.

It appears that there was once a canopy on the dozer. The remains of the center mounts and holes for the front bars are there also.
I have a canopy on a parts machine that will find its way to this dozer.

The 2-53 was “detuned” for the 435 and 440 John Deere’s.
The 35 injectors and a 1850 governed speed keep the horse power and torque down to protect the drive train.
Installing bigger injectors and raising the governed speed is not hard to do. S45 or N45 injectors and. 2800 governed speed makes around 60 hp.
Running the pto at 1000 RPM would help keep the power down.
