Trans cooler lines

I’m new to the dozer world, just purchased a 450e Long track. I’ve been reading these forums for a few weeks now and appreciate all the insight I have found so far.

I was having an issue with the HLR not having any power after warming up. Today I adjusted the clutch as outlined in the tech manual and on this forum. I had 130 psi in neutral and then pretty much nothing in any HLR gear. Ended up draining it he transmission and found the suction screen in the bottom right of the transmission case to be CAKED with gunk… I cleaned the screen really well and tomorrow will drain the steering clutches as well then replace and refill everything.

However in my investigating and looking at things, the transmission cooler lines going to and back appear to be backwards from what I have seen in the parts catalog schematic. In the schematic, the rearmost elbow coming from the trans case goes to the bottom of the trans cooler and then the foreword elbow appears to be the return from the cooler and filter. On my dozer I just acquired, they appear reversed, the elbow closest to the engine goes straight to the bottom of the trans cooler and the line then comes from top of cooler into side of filter and then out bottom of filter and back to the rearmost elbow of the trans case.

Does anyone have experience with the 450e and if this is correct flow or if I should go ahead and reverse those lines…?! Or if it hurts to have it in this arrangement? I assumed the line going to the cooler would be presssurized somewhat and returning maybe more gravity, let me know what you guys think!

The 450E has a two-volume technical manual set, TM1330 RE (Repair) and TM1330 OP (Operation and Tests). Do you have TM1330 OP? The flow chart and description of that system is in the Power Train Hydraulics section of that manual. That should answer your questions best.

I do have both of those manuals, physical bound together in a binder found on ebay. I had looked in that section, but the JD parts catalog https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sid ... Id/2576659 picture kind of threw me off. The routing on mine is correct. I appreciate the response, I am sure I will have some more questions in the not so distant future.

Drawings in a parts catalog can be helpful; however, they may not be correct as a guide for connection points due to the way they are drawn, the technical manuals are usually the best reference. Just like you can't always go by a picture of a part in an ad, many use the same stock photos for similar parts.

I don't think it matters on those cooler lines. As long as it is being cooled the direction shouldn't matter. It should be covered in your manuals and I would dig through them to be sure. I don't remember them being directional however.
