Fluids for 1010c

Post by reedgmi » Mon Mar 03, 2025 7:39 pm

Just want to reconfirm the recommended fluids for a 1010c :

Engine : Easy, Rotella T4, no questions
Trans : Manual says SAE 80 multi purpose lube --> I would use 80W90 Gear Lube
Final Drive : same as trans
Reverser : Manual says Type 303 OR Type A ATF --> Dextron III/Mercon ATF
Hydraulic : Manual says 5W20 oil --> ISO 32 Hydraulic oil? I have some ISO 46 already, any issues?

If I'm way off with anything, let me know please.

John Deere's Hy Gard is the replacement for the JD 303 Special purpose oil. There are a number of aftermarket products meeting the J20C John Deere spec you can use in place of Hy Gard (TSC Universal Premium Tractor Fluid Trans/Hydraulic, Mobil Delvac Tractor Fluid which was formerly Mobilfliud 424, are a couple). Hy Gard or J20C should be listed on the labeling of the container, as a manufacturer's spec met.

The ISO 46 will likely work, depending on temperatures you may need to give it some warmup time in cold weather. The Hy Gard, or other J20C fluid, would also work.

Are you saying use J20C for the Reverser & Hydraulic system only? Or, also for trans & final drive?

I know many of the Ford 8N/Hundred series tractor boys are keen on the Universal Tractor Fluid, although I have never used it before. Looks like now is the time to buy a pail. Or two.

J20C is used throughout in the newer crawlers. My 450E uses it everywhere but the engine. It would be easy to use it in your 1010 reverser, transmission, and hydraulics. Where the final drives are separate on your 1010C, I would likely keep 80W90 in them.

Hi,

The 1010 isn't going to like HyGard in the transmission and final drives. Use gear lube there.

So your suggestion is J20C / HyGard only for hydraulics & reverser?

Hi,

Yes. HyGard only in the reverser and hydraulics. Gear lube in the transmission and final drives. Engine oil, of course, in the engine. ;)
