Hi All,
Just bought an antique JD dozer and i am scratching my head to identify the model and year. The identification plate is no longer on the dozer and from my research i believe it is a 440IC. If i am correct, i assume it is a 58 or 59 as the throttle is on the left side of dash plate. Any help would be much appreciated. I am new to JD dozers and look forward to the forums.
Thanks in advance,
Peter (from Ontario)

All but the last 440's made had the throttle in that position, so no real help there. Does the transmission have a dipstick on the top and a little 4 bolt plate underneath the seat?
Possible years are 58-60.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. It does have a dipstick on left side of gear shifter and a small 4 bolt plate under the seat. I tried to post a pick on the original post but i did something wrong.

Welcome to the Boards.
To post pictures here you have a couple choices. Email Lavoy (
postmaster@jdcrawlers.com) and set up an account on the sites dedicated picture server the server is explained on the Messageboard Q&A and Announcements. Down the list a way you will see ***New JDCrawlers Dedicated Pic Server***, info about it is there. Or you can use a third-party hosting site. Imgur, imbbb, and Postimages are three I know of, and I think are free to use.

Thanks. Do all 1960s have throttle in centre vs the side? If so, I would have a 1959 then?
Thanks,
Peter

No, only the last 440's built have center throttle.

Hi,
One thing about Deere is they tend to just make changes when they are ready to. They don't hold them off for the next model year like the auto makers do. And they often keep right on making running changes right up until when the lines are shut down to begin making something quite a bit different.
And the center throttle level on the 440 was one of those running changes that came late.
