I just picked this up yesterday. Trailered it home with a Chevy C10. What a "White Knuckle" ride! In my web search for info, I came across this great site and some info about the weight. I was under the impression that the crawler weighed around 6,000. I've trailered a Kubota loader/backhoe that was around 6,000 so I thought; "No problem, I'll go slow".

Slow wasn't the word or words I was using. This machine has to weight a lot more than that. In any case, I made it home from a 130 mile trip in about 4 hours. The serial plate is missing on the engine but I found a stamped number on the transmission--Next to the shift tower. It reads C10 with a 4-digit number under it. Is this the serial number or just a trans number?

I'm trying to figure out if it's a true 420 or a mix of parts. The original color looks like it was green so a previous owner daubed the yellow. Probably the same time the "Little Boomer" was added. It runs good but needs some governor adjustments. (Idles like a hit-n-miss engine.)

It is a 420 after serial 100,000, and before 131,306. Look on the left hand side of the bellhousing somewhat forward of the sediment bowl, there might be a tag there.

I checked there. There's a flat boss in the casting with what looks like two rivets but the plate is missing. The only plate I've found is on the Little Boomer. It says "420" with it's serial number 057. Any way to determine the age of the boom from that?

I forgot to mention; It has a 5-speed with the reverser. Would this model be the late 58?

Would the bent steering lever indicate that this was origionally a loader version and someone converted it to a pipelayer?

You could be right about that. There's an unused spool on the far right hand side. (Plugged output ports). The valve handle pivot doesn't have hardly any wear while the others are a little sloppy. That valve could have been for the bucket, I suppose.

I hadn't noticed the steering lever difference before. I did notice they were a little close together. What do the original levers look like?

420's after serial number 108,921 used the the bent levers. It was to provide better access to the shifter when they went to the vertical shifter instead of the bent forward shifter.

Neat looking lil crawler. From what I've found on them and read they've been used for about everything.. never thought about a pipe layer model though!
