fluids/oils

Post by cberlin » Thu Mar 22, 2012 6:16 am

Going to change the oil in my 350c for the final drive and the reverser. I was told to use All purpose tractor fluid in both the reverser and the final drive/transmission. The oil I drained from the final drive definately seemed like gear oil. Smelled like it too. The guy I bought the dozer off of used a glove as a cap on top of the final drive housing and as you can guess it has a TON of dirt and water mixed in the oil. I was told it would be "safe" fill the final drive/tranny with diesel to flush it out. He said to drain the "oil" fill it with diesel and drive it back and forth 20' 3 or 4 times then drain that. I'm going to drain the oil, fill it with diesel jack it up and put it in 4th gear and run it about 30 seconds then drain the diesel/crud. Obviously I'm just going to drain and replace the Reverser along with the filter. I guess my big question is what fluid is suppose to be in each of these (the reverser, up by your right foot) and the (final drive, behind your left heel)?

Thanks for the reply but I thought I read somewhere that the C was different from the straight, A, and B. I believe that on the C the tranny, clutches, and final are all lubed by the same oil and that the reverser was the same oil just in a separate resevoir. Then you had your hydrolic oil, then your engine oil. Did I mis any "oils". I read one place that "All purpose tractor fluid" from Wal mart is acceptable for EVERYTHING but the engine. Anybody disagree with that?

Cberlin, you are correct, the C model machines transmission, steering clutch/brakes and final drives all share a common reservoir so to speak. The reverser has it's own sump, but uses the same type oil. Your clutch discs and brake bands/drums are bathed in this oil,so it's important that it is a quality oil. Whatever oil you use make sure it meets the Deere spec called out in the owners manual. If you go to Deere, they will sell you "Hy-Gaurd" oil.
