My 420C - 1957

Post by dr1zsk1 » Sat Jun 04, 2011 7:48 am

I picked this crawler up a couple of weeks ago. This is my 3rd JD Crawler. The 1st was an MC that I reworked the tracks and clutches, 2nd was 420 that went through my hands quickly, he wanted it worse than I did.

The tracks, rails, and chain all seem to be good. A previous owner has installed idlers and did a fairly decent job. It's solid and functional. The engine is sweet and starts like a dream. The drive clutch and steering clutches and brakes are all good. I've worked it pretty steady and it seems to be all there.

When I bought it the dozer frame had been broken and then the remaining parts were cut off with a torch (ouch). We spend about 5 hours reworking it and with the help of my Pastor Bro. Dave (he could weld the crack of dawn) we got it back together.

I am curious what the blade type is if anyone knows.

So far I've put a top on the exhaust, a battery side cover and a new seat. I've changed all the fluids and that's about it.

The guages work, the tach works, I do have to replace the track carrier bolts that hold it together and don't look forward to that but it has to be done.

My father used 40's and 420's on the farm for logging and loaders. All those we had were yellow.

I am in Central Texas and if anyone else is in this area wants to talk about expensive noisy iron let me know.

For my information only, is that track bushing the right size? It sure looks awfullly small below that sprocket section. Or is it just an optical illusion?
Thanks
PS. By the way how far are you from the Abilene, Texas area? I am 17 miles north of Abilene.
