Post by JD440ICD2006 » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:32 pm

After some record cold weather, we finally got back on the 2-53.
Pictures are self explanatory.

Hi,
An old timer showed me a trick to removing a seal like that.
Get yourself a couple of 3/4 inch sheet metal screws and take a drill that is a little smaller than the screw. Drill a couple of holes into the metal body of the seal, just through the outer shell on opposite sides of the seal. Screw in the screws to get the threads engauged and using a claw tool on the screw head pry the seal out a little on one side then the other. It has worked every time for me. Just be careful how deep you drill.
It seems that every picture I see of new DD pistons they look white. Is that a coating?

That is a great tip for getting those seals out, thanks for sharing.
We used the "old mechanic" procedure. It is ugly when it comes out, but there are no metal fillings to deal with later.

There is indeed a coating of some type on the pistons, not sure what it is or why it is there.

UPDATE:
That coating on the pistons between the ring sets is tin. It is there to cut down on scuffing of the liner wall.

Pistons are loaded in to the liners. We broke an oil ring trying to use a standard wind up ring compressor.
Many thanks to W. W. Williams in Greer, SC, for loading them for me!! It is well worth them doing it as they have the Detroit 53 series piston loader that does it correctly.

2-53 Rebuild - progress continues

Post by JD440ICD2006 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 11:23 am

As of 5:00 PM Friday, we have it to the point of the head torqued down. Still have some minor details such as loading & setting the two injectors, finishing the rocker train, and installing the valve cover along with the oil pickup and oil pan.
The blower is on and torqued, the front seal and front cover are installed.

Good catch, we had a hard time figuring out the firing order. I could not recall if it is 1 - 2 or 2 - 1.

Moving along, we finished the rebuild. It is now moved back to the farm and sitting on the front of the blade support frame. Need to finish the clutch, add the engine mounts, and a few other details.
You do not want to know how we got this heavy beast from the trailer to the front of the crawler. :o

I have had the privilage of moving one of those engines around, you certainly don't pick them up with one hand. That looks like the early belt arrangement, the later engines, the generator belt runs off the fan pully not the waterpump pully, but it is still the belt closest to the engine. But yours is newer than my older engine since it does not have a plate covering access to the air manafold behind the governor. My older 440ICD is 44989x and the newer one is 46019x.

This is a heavy engine, even with the generator, water pump, flywheel/clutch, and blower off of it. The block is built very well out of strong metal.

It is obvious that JD made changes along the way even though these were only produced for two model years. I prefer the generator driven from the water pump. It looks the way that I remember them. No advantage to drive it from the fan pulley as the main belt has to come off to replace the generator belt with either configuration. However, the water pump/generator belt does not need to be touched to replace the main belt.

The progess should move along now that I have the engine installed.
