350B steering questions from Grandma

Post by Barny » Mon Aug 24, 2009 8:33 pm

Seems there are a lot of questions about the steering part of these machines. I want to replace the steering clutch on ours and my wife thinks I'm trying to stimulate the economy one part at time with all of our antique equipment repairs. If a person replaced everything that needed replaced in the final--seals, discs, brakes, bearing ect.. and grandma just used it at church on sundays, always parked inside, never abused, never cussed, infact only nice things were said, In a perfect world, how long does a steering clutch last without having to be replaced? My dad had a MC in the 50's he said he doesn't remember even adjusting the clutches much less replaceing them. Not sure if he let grandma operate it or not. Also not sure how to use the reverser. Can I use it to shift gears or should a person step on the foot clutch to shift. And when idleing should I shift the trans to neutral or can I leave the reverser in neutral? Thanks Barny

I can help answer some but not all of your questions.

Steering clutch life is like any other friction clutch- the lifespan will depend on how much the machine was used and how hard they were worked (heavy load, excessive turns, etc.). If used lightly and kept from mositure, I would guess they could last decades.

As to reversers, those type of reverses need to be shifted using the foot clutch or you could strip gears or worse. The 450 series used a transmission with hydraulic clutch packs (HLR) that can be shifted on the fly, but the 350Bs did not.

350's are like 1010's, they are a full hydraulic reverser, and are meant to be shifted without using the clutch. In actuality, there is no clutch, the clutch pedal is hooked to a valve that just splits the clutch packs to shift gears.
As to clutches, if you are an occasional user, tell Grandma she will likely be able to bury you with the crawler and not need to replace clutches.

What about idle time? Should the trans be shifted to neutral instead of leaving the machine idleing with the the reverser in neutral? Or since there is really no clutch does the oil just bypass? Barny

You won't harm the reverser or the trans by doing that. My fear always has been, what if you bump the reverser lever when getting off the seat?
