Stripped bolts to clutch housing

Post by RMAC » Sat Jul 11, 2009 9:43 pm

The 7/8" x 3-1/2" bolts that go thru the frame and hold the clutch housing on my 450 are stripped or should I say the female threads they go into are. I tried a longer bolt in hopes of catching some thread but had no luck, does anyone know of any type of bolt maybe slightly larger that would be self tapping? or am I just better of to try to find a tap to fit, and hopefully not have to drop the housing.

go to your local parts store and buy some 7/8" inch helicoils, follow the instructions and they will will perform very well for you, be warned, once you helicoil a hole you should not run a tap through it. you can stack helicoils up in the same hole it just takes a little practice. if you wreck a helicoil, hook onto it with a pair of nedle nose vise grips and you should be able to pull it out by not turning them like you would if you were screwing in a thread, but by moving them in a circle motion without actually twisting them around.
