Need help with a 450B Dozer
Can anyone give me some help with a John Deere 450B dozer? It belonged to a good friend of mine who recently passed away and his wife said I can have it our haul it away to the junk yard. It’d hadn’t been run in over 10 years, but my son in law and I got it started with a new battery and a small shot of ether in just a few minutes. It has a 4 cylinder diesel engine that runs smooth and a 6 way blade, all the gauges and controls work fine except that the right hand track will not disengage, it will only go straight or make left hand turns. Seems a shame to junk it.
I think you will find this machine as described has around three to four times the value of scrap and maybe twice to three times the value of a parts machine. It would be a real shame to see it go as scrap. It really sounds like you may have a relatively straightforward problem- stuck steering clutch and/or worn brake band.
It may also be just an adjustment issue- I can't remember if this machine has the hydraulic steering assist or not but I believe remember hearing that the steering setup for these is an iterative process and so is difficult to adjust properly if the proper steps aren't followed.

Get a manual is good advice for a 450B they need to be set up close to proper any way .There is a method in setting up these clutches and as far as getting the old Deere given to you well you got a treasure that is for sure. The 450B /6way is a Swiss army knife of crawlers change your coolant and watch your motor oil for milky white as the sleeves were notorious for pitting and leaking into crankcase.Digitup.

Welcome to JD Crawlers
pops , welcome to the sandbox .
if you are the same guy from Home Shop Machinist , that is a good looking 450 you got . I posted links to the manuals at the John Deere Bookstore over there . You can buy them there or get them off ebay but they are a necessity when working on any crawler . Dan
