I' have the clutch apart (steering) and I think the throw out bearing carrier has dropped three balls and they were not letting the bearing release so no clutch hook up,any theory on this? The 440 never did turn left except when the handel was pulled real hard and the last pull was its last..also need master link for track

If you are not careful when you put the throwout parts together, the balls can fall out of their cups, you most likely won't notice it.

Are the inserts (cups) used to seat the balls available anywhere? One of mine went missing during the clutch job on my 440IC.

Any idea what the part number is for the insert?
Thanks,
Derek

Has anyone tried to make an insert? I made one up from a piece of 1" round stock steel and a 5/8" ball endmill using a lathe. The height of the new insert is the same height as the original, and the height of the new insert with ball in place is the same height as the original with ball in place.
I'm just wondering if it will work.

Derek-
I'd be willing to say go for it. Alot would depend on the material that you made it from. The ball cups are chromed like a bearing race. I don't know if it's crome or what it is.. I do know it's stout material.

I would have to agree with Jimmy. What ever they are, they are hard. If they start to wear, it will adversely affect the way the clutch operates. I have plenty of used ones if you need some.

Lavoy,
I think I will take you up on a used insert.
Do you also have a used throw-out bearing carrier? Mine has some cracks in it, and I'm concerned about the bearing coming loose. If so, can you give me a cost for the insert and carrier?
Thanks,
Derek
