beat out crossbar

Post by swinemar » Mon Mar 26, 2012 12:20 pm

I just purchased a 1975,450b dozer.
the front crossbar has the bushings beat out, where it bolts down to the track rail, and a couple of the holes are broken out.
Any ideas how to fix this or can I weld the crossbar to the track rail?

A Options

Well, your best option is to remove all the bolts that still have an ear to go thru, throw the bushing away, re-install your bolts with washers and then weld the crossbar to the track frame. You may need to drill out the holes and re-tap to the next size larger. Also remember that there are a few bolts the come from the inside as well.

Take a look at the rear mount (round cross bar inserted into the track frame). Could also be alot of wear there, not many quick fixes on this other than using the ancient art of babitting.

If the machine has been run with loose track frames, there is also the possibility of broken bolts between the cross bar, frame sections and the transmission, steering clutch housing. Take some time and see if any attention is needed here. If you weld your cross bar on first and then find you need to remove it to remove broken mounting bolts.

You also just weld her down without bolting but unless you burn a whole bunch of rod you will be in the same spot that you are in now.

These bushings are always a weak point and something that I get rid of ASAP when ever I am fixing up a deere for myself. On our wide pad deeres, all bolts are new high grade oversize, round bar welded to the bolt head to keep them from coming loose, and track frames are welded almost all the way around. This is the extremes that we go to keep them together, but well worth it.

If you run them loose for too long it may result in total destruction of your crawler so spend some time to determine the extent of the damage and fix it as best you can.

I checked the rear crossbar and it looks good, also the inside bolts and bushings on the front crossbar look ok.
I will take your advise and weld the front crossbar to the track rail.
Thanks,JWB : :D
