What are the main differences between the M43TF and 3152DT . I guess I should elaborate a bit . Are the internal components pretty much the same size ? Crank / cam / connecting rods / piston / rings ? Thanks for any information on this one . Thanks in advance .

Do you know what the engines are out of? Also an idea of what you are trying to do with these engines. Those details may help.

Right now, I am thinking the M43TF is the way early 3152 serial numbers started, and I think they changed the serial numbering format about the same time they changed the machine serial numbering format. I ran into something that might be similar on a 2020 Ag tractor, the engine serial number didn't seem to match the available info. After a good bit of digging, I found I had a serial number from before the format change.

SN = Serial Number
M = Engine
4 = Engine series ( on the 2020 5 + 4cylinder, so 4 may+ 3cylinder)
3 = Diesel (1 = gasoline)
T = Using Factory (Dubuque)
F+ Application (what the engine was used in)

The sequential six-digit serial number for the unit follows that and a T at the end means it was built at the Dubuque factory.

The right printing of the proper manual likely decodes it similar to this.

I had to refer to block casing numbers to check and order parts. Do you have service and technical manuals for the appropriate machines the engines are from?

Thanks for the quick response ! The engine came out of a JD 350 seat tag T4F3D serial number 07058 . I’m attempting to put the dozer back in operational condition . I do have surposed correct manual but the numbers do not make sense fording to my manual . I started this project some time ago with a in frame rebuild . Ran great I thought it was all set till it wasent not long after . Ended up spinning Bering on cylinder #3 . Winter came and I got frustrated with it . Ow under different light I got back under machine pulled oil pan to take a good look the crank is scuffed up pretty bad . Took some ad use and tryed to polish crank back to good condition . After a hole night of what I realize now is silly stuff I pulled the engine. Going to do a full rebuild now . Started looking for parts wich made me think a bit on wich direction I should go . Should I bye engine such as 3152 running and just rebuild that one so I know what I have . Or will this one work. . Are the parts same as the 3152 ? Is that what brought me here to begin with the parts are just slightly different ? Sorry for the book . Thanks again for any info . I don’t know a lot about JD 350 but when I’m done I won’t be an expert but I’ll know a lot more thanks to a lot of old timers generous enough to pass a thing or two down .

The info on the 4-180 I found was in the SM for the 2020 with a Nov 66 printing date, so similar might be in a 350 SM printed in 1965 or early 1966.

The 350 engine was a 3-152. One difference might be how the cylinder liners are sealed at the bottom, that was one thing I found on the 2020 and affected getting parts.

The cylinder gaskets seem to be the same as the 3152. The parts guy for JD was also kind of stumped . He was going to call right to john deere .Let's see how that goes.

As I said, I believe the engine is a 3152 diesel. From anything I have seen the 3152 was used until they upgraded to the 3164. Somewhere in the early years of the 350s, they changed the engine serial numbering format. The M43TF is the old format for the 3152 diesel and 3152DT is a newer format. That is what I found on the old 4-180 gas engine I have. Ordering some of the parts required the block casting number, not the engine model number, the 2020 gas tractors all used the 4-cylinder 4-180 engines. My thought is that you have the same scenario here with the 3152 engines.

Scanning through pre-owned manuals on eBay, I found the picture below in a 1020 listing. the 1020 used the same engines as the 350s (3152 gas or diesel). the decoder here follows the one in my 2020 manual as I thought in one of my earlier posts. The F after the D is the application, Same as the letters shown as used for the various 1020s. If the M43DF came from a crawler my thought is the F stands for crawler application.

It will be interesting to hear what your dealer gets back for info, looking forward to it.

Thanks for that valuable piece. Right. now I'm even more curious what they will say. The history of this stuff is pretty interesting and seem to be fading away some. I kind of wish it wasn't so, heavy, greasy and difficult. But then it just wouldn't be the same

Spoke with parts guy who had no clue, and he sent ticket into JD. came back with a big round about no clue. Jim B you had the only answer as far as I'm concerned. Basically, it's an old number of the original 3152. I appreciate this cite more and more. Thanks again.

Same response I got on my 2020 engine. As I said in that case the parts catalog referenced the block casting number for some parts. I used the casting number, where required, and made out fine.

Re: Year and Model Question

Post by 82Maple » Sat Jul 19, 2025 9:07 pm

First time John Deere 350 Owner.
I'm really struggling trying to figure out the year, make and model of a John Deere 350 wide track with a 6-way blade with Gearmatic winch that I just purchased and appears to be in great shape. (I have other vintage equipment including a pair of 440's and a 1953 Ferguson.)
The winch is Gearmatic (Vancouver, BC)
The unit was originally sold by a dealership in Alberta (that no longer exists) by the name of Pardee Equipment Ltc.
The serial number plate appears to have been attached at one point to the left hand located battery box, but the plate is long gone.
On the right hand side of the engine behind the oil filter the block is stamped with three numbers. Top to bottom they are:
R55110
R55120
R55100
To the left of these numbers there appear to be three other characters which appear vertically. They appear to be:DTO
There is a plate riveted to the block just below that which has the following characters embossed:
3152DT | 318522T
Any assistance that readers can provide will be appreciated enormously.
PS - 1st post for me. Not sure how to attach photos.
