450C Injector Pump Solenoid Fixed!

Post by wednesdar » Fri Sep 20, 2024 3:15 pm

This is going to seem real basic to the old hands on this forum, but I just replaced my injector pump solenoid and wanted to post some resources in case anyone else needs to do the same and is intimidated by the prospect of doing so.

The issue with mine was that it was getting stuck open, so the tractor would not shut down. From the look of the old one, it is definitely the original from 1979... incredible it lasted this long.

The only tools you should need are 5/16" and 11/32" open end wrenches, and a clean shop towel or similar to cover the pump after it is opened. I bought the replacement gasket for the cover, but did not wind up using it, as the old one seemed totally fine.

I replaced mine with

which is Stanadyne's High Force solenoid. I was a bit worried it wouldn't fit as it is larger than stock, but it went in no problem.

I followed this video:

to get all the washers, torque values, etc. straight. The little tip about bending a wire to hold the solenoid while getting the cover back on is a gem!

In any case, my tractor now turns off instantly when I turn the key, which is amazingly satisfying!!
