jd 450ca dozer/crawler engine oil type

Post by Jeff.morton » Mon Sep 16, 2024 10:11 am

mine has the gas engine and the manuals i can find online only give the engine oil type for diesels. does any one know what weight oil to use in the gas engine.

Just acquired it this summer. We have been using it, and what a great little machine. previous owner thought it was a crawler that was changed to the 6way bulldozer that it is now. Fits in tight spaces and if you take your time it pushes lots of dirt around...lol

Welcome to the boards.

15W40 oil rated for diesels will work just fine in your Gas or diesel. Sounds like you have a "modified" 450C, if it really is a C. Does it have wet or dry steering clutches? I believe the 450Cs all left the factory as diesels either naturally aspirated or turbo charged. That would explain the reason you only find info for diesels in the manuals.

i am not positive, but i think wet clutches.

its a 450ca... supposedly the a means gas right from the factory. if i am even understanding what i am seeing online. i have read so much i may be confused.

thanks for the oil weight. thats what we used (15w40) but i didnt want to go too heavy.

Definitely interesting. No Gasoline engine or components are shown in the 450C parts catalog. No gasoline engine option is given in the 450C introduction section with the online parts catalog. There is a 450c spec sheet on the JD non-current construction models and it only shows a turbocharged 4-219. From info I find it would have been a special order, not in the books, or it has had an engine transplant. If you can, link the info, you found showing a gas engine in a 450C.

Using the info in the 450C Introduction document see which type of serial number tag your 450c has (they changed from the earlier basic crawler serial number tag style to the Product Identification Number style. See how the info in the 450C introduction document compares to the type tag your machine has.

450C spec sheet

What is the full id/serial number on the tag? Is the engine serial number tag in place? What does it say. To post pictures here you have to use the site's dedicated picture server (using it requires setting up a user account for it with Lavoy) or using a third-party hosting site; Post Image or Imgur are a couple that work.

The large covers on the steering clutch housings of a 450C do not have a smaller cover, held down by 5 3/8" capscrews on them, that the large covers on the dry clutch machines had.
