450C steering clutches oil
I am unclear whether on a 450C, steering clutches oil needs to be checked and maintained separate from the transmission. Does the steering clutches housing not communicate with transmission oil reservoir?

The 450C has a common sump. Steering clutch oil fill plugs should be red locktite shut. Trans and R/L steering clutches have a common sump.

The answer to your question will depend on the ser# of your machine and the year it was built and/or if it was converted after it was built. The early model 450c’s were produced with a separate reservoir and a lot of them were converted to a common sump. I have never gotten a clear understanding of the exact year and ser# but most people think that sometime around 1978 is when the factory went to a common sump. I have a tract loader 450CA and serial is 245366 and year reportedly is 1976.

Mine does not have common sump. I have to check all three separately. Most people seem to suggest if the fill plug is removable ie not lock tighted in they do not have the common sump done.

Yes that ser# would put yours as an early to mid 1976 model. Here is a post that I have found helpful in determining year models on the 450 series.

I have an 1981 450c dozer that came with the common sump bet the plugs were able to be removed easily. I don’t know if someone broke them loose before I got it or not but you don’t want to open them up with the transmission filled up on the dipstick. Don’t ask me how I know.

On a some what related subject--I need to check and clean/replace transmission oil filter on lower right side and also replace a leaking PTO oil seal.
Do I need to drain all transmission oil for either or both procedures? Tech manual is not clear on this but I guess they assume common sense that it needs done?

Yes, the screen is at the bottom of the sump. It's going to be alot of oil be prepared to catch all that.

Thanks everyone for the helpful information. Tractor is working much better. Had to replace rollers as well. Adjusting clutches as best I could seamed to help the problems. Now need to check/clean trans filter and replace leaking PTO seal while trans is drained.
Loader Boom lever- two pins
inner boom levers have two attached pins (middle and lower) and one through (top) pin. The two lower pins on right inner lever have come loose. My question is how are the middle and lower pins attached to the inner lever and can they be reattached? They need to be flush with the inner side of the lever. Looks like they may have been welded then ground even With lever?
