450c steering clutch
Hey guys. My right hand steering clutch went out on my a while ago. Finally got around to tearing it all apart. To my surprised the clutches appear fine. However two funny things are going on. On the clutch pressure manifold ring, pic 1, it looks like there should be an Allen head plug in it. If I apply pressure on the hose air comes out this hole, is it possible that the plug worked itself out of there? I had a gradual loss off power on this clutch until it was suddenly gone? Second question. See pic 2. This hose has wear on it as though the clutch was moving around in the housing. The jam nut in the steering break drum was not tight. This nut holds the clutch assembly static on the drive shaft?

Re: 450c steering clutch
I would say it is possible for the plug to work its way out from the looks of your manifold ring. From the tech manual drawing you posted, they eliminated the hole/plug in later manifold rings. Given the loose bolt your picture shows, beside the wear on the hose, and the loose set screw nut you mention; it looks like the last person in there didn't tighten things up properly. How do the threads in the manifold ring look? You might want to use one of the thread locking pipe sealers when you install the plug. As for the hose, look things over carefully as well as getting components properly tightened. That appears that it may be a replacement hose, sometimes a slight change in length or the length/size of fittings on replacement hoses can cause issues. Slightly changing the angle of the fittings the hose attaches to might make a difference.

Re: 450c steering clutch
So finally had some time off from work and finally got after this project. Found that the threads were bad in the clutch manifold that the pipe plug screwed into. First few threads grabbed and that was it. Tapped it and threw a new plug in. Also found that the set screw was missing on the other clutch as well that holds the clutch static in place. Put everything together and she’s running good as new again.
