1969 350 dozer quill oring

Post by psheets » Wed Apr 22, 2020 12:13 pm

I have a 1969 JD 350 dozer. I have the quill out to change the oil seal. My diagram shows 2 orings that go between the quill flange and the shims is this correct. It makes sense with the 1 oring because there is a slight indention at the flange. Just doesn’t make sense there are two and doesn’t make sense it would be before the shins. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes this is correct. As I recall, the two o-rings are different sizes. As in one will be a smaller diameter thickness than the other. The smaller or thinner one goes on the quill first before the shims and then the second o-ring will fit in a groove machined into the quill which should be out a little ways away from the shim pack. It fits just inside the transmission case sealing it and then the other o-ring will fit directly against the outer side of the transmission case. This seals the transmission from the clutch housing as does the oil seal.

Like a lot of the other procedures I have done over the years, I have slept several times since the last time I was in this deep on a 350. The later model 350C, 350D and the 400G did away with these o-rings since they had wet clutches and they all used a common source for the lube fluids.

Just for information sake, if you ever do a complete overhaul on the transmission / differential on a 350, 350B you want to set those up dry with no seals or O-rings in place. Get everything set to specs and then install your seals and o-rings. That way you're not fighting them and taking a chance of damaging one of them in the process.

Hope this helps a bit and good luck!! :D

Thank you. The diagram in the book shows both before the shim pack that is where i was confused at.
